Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1610

It is narrated from Kurayb, the freed slave (mawla) of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask on which days the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted the most. She said: "Saturday and Sunday." I returned and told them, and it was as if they found this strange. Then they all went to her together and said: We sent this messenger to you to ask about such-and-such, and he told us that you said such-and-such. She said: "He has spoken the truth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted most on Saturday and Sunday, and he used to say: 'These two days are festival days of the polytheists, and I wish (by fasting) to differ from them.'"

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Variation in the chain: This is how it is in manuscript (Z), while manuscripts (S), (B) and ('A) have the words "these two days are the festival of the polytheists". In al-Bayhaqi's al-Sunan al-Kubra 4/ 303 and Fada'il al-Awqat (306) the words are "two days of festival for the polytheists", and he narrated it from Imam al-Hakim with his chain and text.

Grading: Its chain is hasan on account of 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Umar al-'Alawi and his father. Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, while Ibn al-Qattan graded it hasan in Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham 4/ 269.
Criticism of a narrator: Its narrators include Abu al-Muwajjih (Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari), 'Abdan ('Abd Allah bin 'Uthman) and 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 44/ (26750) narrated it from 'Attab bin Ziyad, al-Nasa'i (2789) and Ibn Hibban (3646) from Hibban bin Musa, and Ibn Hibban at (3616) from Salamah bin Sulayman (all three from Ibn al-Mubarak), with this same chain. 'Attab's narration is abridged and does not mention the story.
Details of the narration: Al-Nasa'i (2788) narrated, through the route of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid from Ibn al-Mubarak up to Kurayb, that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asking: On which days did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) like to fast? They said: Until his (peace and blessings be upon him) death, most of his fasting was on Saturday and Sunday, and he would say: "These two are festival days of the People of the Book, so we like to differ from them."
Criticism of a narrator: Baqiyyah (bin al-Walid) is not a strong narrator.
