Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but it has been judged defective on account of idtirab (inconsistency) and contradiction. We have discussed it in detail in the commentary on the Musnad of Ahmad 29/ (17686), which makes repeating it here unnecessary, and the author (al-Hakim) has also mentioned here, in this chapter, some hadiths that contradict it.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud narrated it at (2421) through the chain of Yazid bin Qubays from al-Walid bin Muslim.
Important point: Imam Abu Dawud said immediately after it that this hadith is abrogated.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan. Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it through various routes from Thawr bin Yazid.
General principle: The meaning of its being disliked here is that a man singles out Saturday for fasting, because the Jews venerate this day.
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i narrated it at (2778) through the chain of Sa'id bin 'Amr from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid from Thawr bin Yazid, but he said "his paternal aunt al-Samma'" instead of "his sister al-Samma'".
Variation in the chain: Ahmad narrated it through the route of Isma'il bin 'Ayyash and al-Nasa'i through the route of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid; but in Baqiyyah's narration at al-Nasa'i "his maternal aunt al-Samma'" is mentioned, whereas Isma'il bin 'Ayyash said "his sister al-Samma'".
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i narrated it through the routes of Ibn 'Abd Allah bin Busr and al-Fudayl bin Fadalah, but al-Fudayl said "his maternal aunt al-Samma'".
Details of the narration: Some narrators narrated it as a hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Busr from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), without mentioning al-Samma' in it.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1726) and al-Nasa'i (2774) narrated it through the chain of 'Isa bin Yunus from Thawr bin Yazid; al-Samma' is not mentioned in it.
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i narrated it through the route of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, but Yazid bin 'Abd Rabbih, narrating from Baqiyyah, did not mention the intermediary "Luqman" in it.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it through the route of Hassan bin Nuh, and Ahmad through the route of Yahya bin Hassan (both from 'Abd Allah bin Busr), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Criticism of a narrator: After this narration Imam al-Nasa'i said: "Abu Taqi is da'if and of no standing; I recorded it only to show the disagreement in the chain."
Important point: Al-liha' (with kasrah under the lam) means the bark of a tree. The liha' of a grape means its skin; the word is borrowed from the bark of wood, as Ibn al-Athir explained in al-Nihayah.
Important point: Here the author (Imam al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him) made two errors. First, Imam Muslim did not narrate it; rather, it is in Sahih al-Bukhari (1986). Second, Imam al-Bukhari did not narrate it through the route of Hammam from Qatadah, but through this same route of Shu'bah from Qatadah that the author mentioned.
Details of the narration: As for the route of Hammam from Qatadah, it is found in the Musnad of Ahmad 44/ (26756), 45/ (27425), Abu Dawud (2422) and elsewhere.
