It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Ummah will remain upon my Sunnah as long as it does not wait for the stars to appear before breaking its fast." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting, he would order a man, who would climb onto some elevated place, and when he said that the sun had set, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would break his fast.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this particular wording; they recorded it only with the words: "People will remain in goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih and all its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ibn Khuzaymah says: I fear that the final words may be those of Sufyan al-Thawri or Abu Hazim rather than of Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), and that they were inserted (idraj) into the hadith. Criticism of a narrator: Sufyan refers to al-Thawri, and Abu Hazim refers to Salamah bin Dinar. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3510) narrated it via Ibn Khuzaymah with this same chain. Details of the narration: This hadith is also narrated with other wording, to which the author (al-Hakim) will point later. (1589). Note / Clarification: See the earlier hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), no. (1589). Important point: "Al-nashaz" (with fathah on the nun and the shin): it refers to a raised or elevated part of the ground.
Note / Clarification: As for Imam Muslim, yes (he narrated it through the route of al-Thawri); but Imam al-Bukhari transmitted it through routes other than that of al-Thawri. Reference / Source: Ahmad (37/ 22846), Muslim (1098) and al-Tirmidhi (699) narrated it through the chain of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi from Sufyan, with the very wording to which the author pointed. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri via 'Abd al-Razzaq (22827) and Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq (22846). Details of the narration: Ahmad (22804 and others), al-Bukhari (1957), Muslim (198), Ibn Majah (1697), al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it through various routes from Abu Hazim that do not include Sufyan al-Thawri.
