It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has dates should break his fast with them, and whoever does not find any should break his fast with water, for water is a means of purification."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1592). Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Bukhari, Sa'id bin 'Amir al-Duba'i made an error in its chain; Imam al-Tirmidhi says that no one other than Sa'id bin 'Amir narrated it in this way from Shu'bah, and that it is a "ghayr mahfuz" (erroneous) narration. General principle: The correct version is what Sufyan al-Thawri and others narrated through the chain of 'Asim al-Ahwal from Hafsah from al-Rabab from Salman bin 'Amir, which comes next. However, breaking the fast with dates or water is established from the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) (no. 1592). Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (694) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through the chain of Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Muqaddami from Sa'id bin 'Amir, with this same chain.
