It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) vomited and so he (peace and blessings be upon him) broke his fast. (The narrator says:) Then I met Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque of Damascus and mentioned this to him, and he said: "He has spoken the truth; it was I who poured the water for his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but the two Shaykhs did not record it because of a disagreement about it among the students of Abd al-Samad. Some narrated it as "Ya'ish bin al-Walid from his father from Ma'dan," which is an error, whereas Harb bin Shaddad and Hisham al-Dastuwa'i narrated it with the correct chain "Ya'ish bin al-Walid from Ma'dan."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although, according to al-Bayhaqi, considerable inconsistency (idtirab) occurred in this chain, Imam al-Bukhari declared it "good (jayyid)", as al-Tirmidhi reported in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (57). Ibn al-Turkumani says that when a thiqah narrator gives the chain correctly, it is relied upon and the disagreement is disregarded, since many hadiths of the Sahihayn are also not free of such disagreements. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (3109) and Ibn Hibban (1097) narrated it via the route of Abu Musa Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (45/ 27502), al-Tirmidhi (87) and al-Nasa'i (3108) narrated it via the route of 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Abd al-Warith, except that their chain contains the addition of "Abu Ya'ish" between Ya'ish bin al-Walid and Ma'dan. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2381) and al-Nasa'i (3107) narrated it via the route of Abu Ma'mar 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr from 'Abd al-Warith. It too has the words "Ya'ish bin al-Walid from his father", and in Abu Dawud it appears as "Ma'dan bin Talhah". Variation in the chain: Imam Ahmad (45/ 27537) and al-Nasa'i (3116) narrated it via the chain of 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, that Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) vomited, so he broke his fast; then water was brought and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu'." Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Tirmidhi, Ma'mar made a mistake here: he did not mention al-Awza'i and said "Khalid bin Ma'dan", whereas the correct form is "Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (37/ 22372) narrated via the chain of Balj from Abu Shaybah al-Mahri that Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked to narrate to them a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) vomit, and he broke his fast." Note / Clarification: A detailed discussion of the disagreements in this chain and how to reconcile them is in the commentary on "Musnad Ahmad" (45/ 27502), so there is no need to repeat it.
