Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1561

Simak (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: On the day of doubt about Ramadan I went to Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him), and he was eating. He said: "Come near and eat." I said: "I am fasting." He said: "By Allah! You will have to come near and eat." I said: "Then narrate a hadith to me." He said: "Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not go ahead to receive the month in advance; rather, fast upon sighting the moon and break the fast upon sighting the moon. Then if a cloud or dust comes between you and the moon, complete a count of thirty days.'"
The chain of this hadith is sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these words.

Then we met Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked: "On which night did you see it?" We told him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has extended it for sighting, so it belongs to the night on which you saw it." This is the wording of Muslim.

Kurayb says that in Syria the new moon was sighted on the night of Friday. When I returned to Madinah at the end of the month, Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "When did you see it?" I said: On the night of Friday. He asked: "Did you see it yourself?" I said: Yes, and the people saw it too and fasted, and Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) fasted as well. Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "But we saw it on the night of Saturday, so we will keep fasting until we complete thirty or see it." I said: Will you not suffice with the sighting of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his fasting? He said: "No, this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us."
