Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1545

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that his mother had died; if he gave charity on her behalf, would it benefit her? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: "I have a fruit-bearing orchard, and I make you a witness that I have given it in charity on her behalf."
This is a supporting hadith that is sahih on the condition of Imam Bukhari.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 3504), al-Bukhari (2770), Abu Dawud (2882), al-Tirmidhi (669) and al-Nasa'i narrated it via the route of Rawh bin 'Ubadah.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (9448) narrated it via the chain of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from 'Amr bin Dinar, and it states explicitly that the "unnamed man" mentioned in this hadith is Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3080) and al-Bukhari (2756) narrated it via the chain of Ya'la bin Hakim from 'Ikrimah, and Ya'la also stated the name of Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) explicitly.
Reference / Source: It is reported via 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd Allah from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "My mother has died and she had a vow (nadhr) outstanding?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fulfil it on her behalf."
General principle: It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim (1638) and other books. There is some disagreement in the chain as to whether it belongs to the Musnad of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) or of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), but both are Companions, so this disagreement does no harm.
Important point: There is no contradiction between the narrations about the mother's "vow" and about giving "charity" on her behalf; al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says it is possible that he asked separately about both the vow and the charity.
Important point: "Makhrafan" means a bustan (garden).
