Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1539

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two kinds of jealousy: one which Allah loves and the other which Allah hates. And there are two kinds of pride: one which Allah loves and the other which Allah dislikes. The jealousy which is in a place of doubt and suspicion, Allah loves; and the jealousy which is without cause, Allah hates. The pride a man shows when he gives charity, Allah loves; while the pride which comes from arrogance, Allah hates."
The chain of this hadith is sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" this name was written wrongly; the correct form is "al-Azraq", as in the margin of manuscript (Z), "Ithaf al-Maharah" (11/ 206) and all the sources of Ma'mar's narration. His name is also given as "Khalid bin Zayd", and the preponderant view is that these two are one and the same person, as will be explained later at hadith (2498).

Note / Clarification: The part from the words "fa-l-ghayrah" up to here had dropped out of manuscripts (Z), (B) and ('A), and it was recorded in the margin of manuscript (S).

Grading: God willing, its chain is hasan; see our comment on it at hadith number (2498).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (28/ 17398) narrated it from 'Abd al-Razzaq, with this same chain.
