It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three kinds of people whom Allah loves, and three whom Allah hates. As for those whom Allah loves: one of them is a man who came to a people and asked them by Allah, not on the basis of any kinship between them, and one man from among them stayed behind and gave to him secretly, in such a way that no one knew of his gift except Allah and the one who received it; and a people who travelled all night until, when sleep became dearer to them than anything, they stopped to rest and laid down their heads, and one man among them stood up and began humbling himself before Me and reciting My verses; and a man who was in an army detachment, then they met the enemy and the army was defeated, but he advanced with his chest forward until he was martyred or granted victory. And the three whom Allah hates are: the old adulterer, the poor man who is arrogant, and the rich man who is oppressive."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The part between the brackets was not in our manuscripts; we have established it from the printed editions, "Musnad Ahmad" and the other takhrij sources.
Note / Clarification: The word "rajul" (a man) is present only in manuscript ('A).
Grading: This hadith is sahih. Criticism of a narrator: Although only Rib'i bin Hirash narrated from Zayd bin Zabyan, and no one other than Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy, Corroborating chains and supporting reports: he is nevertheless corroborated; moreover, Imam al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban declared this hadith of his sahih. (1103). Variation in the chain: There was disagreement over Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir in this chain. Imam Shu'bah and others narrated it via the chain "from Rib'i bin Hirash, from Zayd bin Zabyan, from Abu Dharr", whereas Sufyan al-Thawri went against them and narrated it as "from Mansur, from Rib'i, from Abu Dharr" (without mentioning Zayd bin Zabyan in between). Important point: The preserved (mahfuz) narration is that of Shu'bah and those who agree with him, as al-Daraqutni stated explicitly in "al-'Ilal" (696 and 1103). 35/ (21355). Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Musnad Ahmad" (35/ 21355). Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2568), al-Nasa'i (1316 and others) and Ibn Hibban (3349 and others) narrated it via various routes from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with this same chain. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "sahih". Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi also narrated it immediately after hadith (2568) via the chain of al-Nadl bin Shumayl from Shu'bah. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3350) narrated it via the route of Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid from Mansur. Details of the narration: The narration of Sufyan al-Thawri that we referred to above was narrated by Imam Ahmad (21356) and al-Nasa'i (1317 and 7098) via the chain of Mansur, from Rib'i, from Abu Dharr (without mentioning Zayd bin Zabyan). Note / Clarification: This narration will come later via the route of Adam bin Abi Iyas from Shu'bah at number (2564). (2477). Note / Clarification: A narration of similar meaning will come later via the route of Mutarrif bin 'Abd Allah from Abu Dharr at number (2477).
