It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One dirham has surpassed a hundred thousand dirhams." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! How can one dirham surpass a hundred thousand dirhams?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man had only two dirhams, and he took one of them and gave it in charity; while another man had a great deal of wealth, and he took a hundred thousand dirhams out of his heaps of wealth and gave them in charity."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is strong (qawi) on account of Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, Variation in the chain: however, there was disagreement over him in its chain. Safwan bin 'Isa narrated it via Ibn 'Ajlan, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, whereas al-Layth bin Sa'd (who is more trustworthy than him) narrated it via Ibn 'Ajlan, from Sa'id al-Maqburi and al-Qa'qa' bin Hakim. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (2319) and Ibn Hibban (3347) narrated it via two routes from Safwan bin 'Isa, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14/ 8929) narrated it via al-Layth bin Sa'd, Important point: In Musnad Ahmad the wording is "one dirham outstripped two dirhams", whereas the correct wording, as in the narrations of the majority, is "one dirham outstripped a hundred thousand dirhams". (1523). Important point: "Min 'urdiha" (with a dammah on the 'ayn): that is, from one side or a small portion of his wealth. Al-Sindi says that the apparent meaning of this hadith is that the small charity of a poor person is many times more virtuous than the large charity of a rich person, and this is supported by the hadith "The best charity is the effort of one who has little." Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed at (number 1523).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar objected to this in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (14/ 517), saying: Its authenticity is questionable, because al-Layth bin Sa'd has a better memory than Safwan, and he narrated it from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan saying "from Sa'id al-Maqburi and al-Qa'qa' bin Hakim, from Abu Hurayrah". So Ibn 'Ajlan was inconsistent (mudtarib) in it, and therefore this narration falls below the rank of sahih.
