It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Which charity is the most excellent?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hard-earned effort of one who has little (given in charity), and begin with those whose upkeep is your responsibility."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Criticism of a narrator: Ahmad bin Ibrahim is Ibn Milhan, Ibn Bukayr is Yahya bin Abdullah bin Bukayr, al-Layth is Ibn Sa'd, and Abu al-Zubayr is Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus. Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/ 8702), Abu Dawud (1677) and Ibn Hibban (3346) narrated it through various routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (12/ 7155), al-Bukhari (1426, 1428, 5355 and 5356), Muslim (1042), Abu Dawud (1676), al-Tirmidhi (680), al-Nasa'i (2325, 2326, 2336 and 9165) and Ibn Hibban (3363 and 4243) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best charity is that which leaves (the giver) self-sufficient; the upper hand is better than the lower hand; and begin with those in your care." These are the words of Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari. (8702). Details of the narration: On the topic of "juhd al-muqill" (the effort of one with little means), narrations are reported from several Companions, which we have mentioned in Musnad Ahmad under hadith (8702). Important point: Al-Sindi says that "juhd" (with a dammah) means capacity and ability, i.e. what a person with little wealth can bear; or (it is said) his hard-earned effort. General principle: Spending is permissible for a person of little means only when he has the strength to be patient and has no dependants (family) to support; otherwise, giving charity out of surplus wealth is better.
