It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Giving charity to a poor person is only one charity, whereas giving charity to a close relative is two things: it is both charity and upholding the ties of kinship."

Grading: It is sahih on the basis of other supporting reports, and this chain is possibly hasan. Although only Hafsah bint Sirin narrates from Umm al-Ra'ih (al-Rabab), she is a Tabi'iyyah and Ibn Hibban declared her trustworthy. Criticism of a narrator: Uthman bin Umar is Ibn Faris al-Abdi, Ibn Awn is Abdullah bin Awn bin Artaban, and Salman bin Amir is al-Dabbi, the paternal uncle of Umm al-Ra'ih. Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/ 16227 and 16235, 29/ 17872 and 17883), Ibn Majah (1844), al-Nasa'i (2374) and Ibn Hibban (3344) narrated it through Ibn Awn with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/ 16226, 29/ 17873 and 16232) and al-Tirmidhi (658) narrated it through Asim al-Ahwal and Hisham bin Hassan, and added these words: "When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates; otherwise with water, for it is purifying." Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan". Details of the narration: In the narrations of Yazid bin Harun and Yahya al-Qattan (Ahmad 26/ 16233, 16234 and 29/ 17884, 17870), the link of "Umm al-Ra'ih" is not present; rather the chain is directly Hafsah from Salman bin Amir. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Ibn Mas'ud, which is in al-Bukhari (1466) and Muslim (1000): "She will have two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity."
