Musa bin Talhah narrates: We have with us the document of Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that was from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in which it is mentioned that he (peace and blessings be upon him) collected zakah only from wheat, barley, raisins and dates.
All the narrators of this hadith have been used as evidence, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; and Musa bin Talhah is a senior Tabi'i, whose having lived in the time of Sayyiduna Mu'adh is not disputed.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is sahih; although Musa bin Talhah did not meet Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), he transmitted this narration from his book (document), and "wijadah" (finding a written document) is sound and accepted according to the scholars. Criticism of a narrator: Sufyan is al-Thawri, and 'Amr bin 'Uthman is Ibn Mawhab. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (36/21989) narrated it through Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, with this same chain. Note / Clarification: See the narration that follows it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abd al-Hadi, critiquing al-Hakim in "al-Muharrar" (573), quoted the statement of Abu Zur'ah: "The narration of Musa bin Talhah from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is mursal." Then Ibn Abd al-Hadi says: Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) died during the caliphate of 'Umar, so Musa's narration from him is all the more mursal. It has also been said that Musa was born in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and that he (peace and blessings be upon him) named him, but this is not established.
