It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not fitting for a Muslim to be one who curses much." Salim says: I never heard Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) curse anything.
A group of imams narrated this hadith from Kathir bin Zayd with a connected chain (musnad); then Hammad bin Zayd alone narrated it from him as the saying of the Companion (mawquf). As for the two Shaykhs, they did not take narrations from Kathir bin Zayd. He is an elder of Madinah and his kunyah is Abu Muhammad; I do not know of any criticism having been made of his narration; they left him only because of the small number of his hadiths. And Allah knows best. This hadith has supporting narrations with different wordings from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah, Abu al-Darda' and Samurah bin Jundub, through which this hadith becomes sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Because of Kathir bin Zayd, this chain is hasan. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4792) via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim. Reference / Source: Al-Ruyani narrated it in his Musnad (1445) through the chain of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani from Uthman bin Umar.
Reference / Source: This narration of Hammad is in al-Tabarani (13063). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration's being "mawquf" is shadh, because most narrators narrated it from Kathir bin Zayd as "marfu'".
