Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1469

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no zakah on silver until it reaches two hundred dirhams."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. A supporting narration (shahid) for it, with further explanation, is the hadith of Asim bin Damrah:

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (z) and (s) this name was distorted into "Sa'd", whereas he is Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Dabbi.

Grading: This hadith is sahih through other routes, but this particular wording and chain are da'if because of a break (inqita').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Amr bin Dinar did not hear it from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), as Ibn Khuzaymah said.
Criticism of a narrator: Muhammad bin Muslim al-Ta'ifi is saduq, but his memory is weak, and he dropped the intermediary between 'Amr and Jabir, as will be explained under hadith number (1476).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/134) narrated it via the route of Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (2/35) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (13/116 and 20/136), via two routes from Muhammad bin Muslim al-Ta'ifi. Ibn Abd al-Barr says that among the students of 'Amr bin Dinar, Muhammad bin Muslim alone narrated this, and what he narrates alone is not strong.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (22/14162) from Abd al-Razzaq, and Ibn Majah (1794) via the route of Waki', both narrated with the chain Muhammad bin Muslim from 'Amr bin Dinar from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no zakat on fewer than five camels, no zakat on less than five awaq (of silver), and no zakat on less than five wasq (of grain)" (these are the words of Ibn Majah).
Grading: With this same meaning, the hadith is established as sahih from Jabir through another route; Muslim (980) narrated it with the chain Abdullah bin Wahb from 'Iyad bin Abdullah from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir.
