Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1462

The grandsons of Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate from their father, and he from their grandfather, that in the letter which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to Amr bin Hazm there was also this: "When the value of gold reaches two hundred dirhams, then one dirham (of zakah) is due on every forty dirhams."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and it is evidence for that detailed and explained letter.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The original document is authentic, but this chain is da'if because of a break (inqita').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): If "their grandfather" means 'Amr bin Hazm, then it is munqati', because Abu Bakr bin Muhammad did not meet his grandfather 'Amr; and if it means Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Hazm, then it is mursal.
Criticism of a narrator: The name of Abu Uways is Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Uways.
Reference / Source: Ibn Zanjawayh narrated it in "al-Amwal" (1683) via the route of Ibn Abi Uways, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is supported by the marfu' hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: "There is no zakat on less than five awaq (of silver)", narrated by al-Bukhari (1405) and Muslim (979), and it is also in "Musnad Ahmad" (17/11030).
General principle: "Awaq" is the plural of uqiyah; one uqiyah is forty dirhams, and one dirham equals 2.975 grams.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah, like the hadith of Abu Sa'id, is found in Ahmad (15/9221).
Grading: Its chain is sahih. And see the narration that follows it.
