Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1451

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the treasure of one of you (the wealth on which zakah was not paid) will appear as a bald serpent with two black marks over its eyes. It will pursue its owner, and the owner will seek refuge from it, but it will keep following him while he flees from it, until it takes his finger into its mouth."
Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim recorded the hadiths of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) in this chapter in abridged form (as a stern warning against withholding zakah), but they did not record this particular hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Because of Muhammad bin 'Ajlan the chain is strong (qawi) and the hadith is sahih. Abdullah bin Salih and Yahya bin Bukayr are its trustworthy narrators. Abu Salih is Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/8933), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it via two routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Asim bin Abi al-Nujud supported al-Qa'qa' in Musnad Ahmad. Abdullah bin Dinar also narrated it from Abu Salih, but there is a difference in his narration.
Grading: In al-Bukhari (1403) and al-Nasa'i, the narration of Abdullah bin Dinar is reported as marfu'.
Grading: Imam Malik narrated it in the "Muwatta'" as mawquf (a saying of Abu Hurayrah), and al-Daraqutni called the mawquf version the correct one.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Nevertheless, this hadith is established from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' through several other sahih routes:
Reference / Source: Hammam, Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj (al-Bukhari 1402), al-Hasan al-Basri and Abd al-Rahman al-Huraqi narrated it from Abu Hurayrah as marfu'.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The narration of Thawban is indeed in both al-Bukhari and Muslim, and that of Abu Hurayrah was narrated by al-Bukhari, but neither of them narrated the narrations of Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn 'Umar. The narration of Ibn Mas'ud is reported in Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi with a sahih chain.
Grading: The narration of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) is found in Musnad Ahmad (10/5729) and al-Nasa'i with a sahih chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the narration of Jabir bin Abdullah is found in Muslim (988) and al-Nasa'i.
