أخبرنا أبو الفضل الحسن بن يعقوب، حدثنا يحيى بن أبي طالب، حدثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، أخبرنا سعيد بن أبي عَرُوبة. وأخبرنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق الفقيه، أخبرنا أبو المُثنَّى، حدثنا محمد بن المِنْهال، حدثنا يزيد بن زُرَيع، حدثنا سعيد، عن قَتَادةَ، عن سالم بن أبي الجَعْد الغَطَفاني، عن مَعْدان بن أبي طلحة اليَعمَري، عن ثَوْبان قال: قال رسولُ الله ﷺ: "مَن تَرَكَ بعدَه كَنزًا، مُثِّل له يومَ القيامة شُجاعًا أقرَعَ له زَبِيبتان، يَتْبَعُ فَاهُ، فيقول: وَيلَكَ ما لكَ؟ فيقول: أنا كنزُك الذي تَركتَه بعدَك، فلا يزال يَتبعُه حتى يُلْقِمَه يدَه فيَقْضَمُها، ثم يُتبِعُه سائرَ جسدِه" (1). هذا حديث صحيحٌ على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه. وله شاهدٌ صحيح على شرطه أيضًا:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever leaves behind him a hoarded treasure (kanz: wealth on which zakah was not paid), on the Day of Resurrection it will be made to appear to him as an extremely venomous, bald serpent with two black spots above its eyes. It will pursue his mouth, and the person will say: Woe to you, what are you? It will reply: I am your treasure which you left behind you. It will keep pursuing him until he puts his hand into its mouth and it chews it up; then it will swallow the rest of his body as well."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. There is also an authentic supporting hadith (shahid) for it that meets his condition:

(1) إسناده صحيح. أبو المثنى: هو معاذ بن معاذ، وثوبان: هو مولى رسول الله ﷺ. Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) is the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). وأخرجه ابن حبان (3257) من طريق أمية بن بسطام، عن يزيد بن زريع، بهذا الإسناد. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3257) narrated it via the chain of Yazid bin Zuray', with this same chain.
