Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1439

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the angels said four takbirs over the funeral of Adam (peace be upon him); Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs over the funeral of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs over the funeral of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs over the funeral of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) said four takbirs over the funeral of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs over the funeral of al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him).
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Mubarak bin Fadalah is of such a rank in asceticism and knowledge that a narrator like him is not criticised; however, the two Shaykhs did not take his narrations because of the weakness of his memory. There is a supporting hadith (shahid) for this hadith, as follows:

Grading: (1) The chain is da'if and the text contains "nakarah" (an objectionable element). Mubarak bin Fadalah is a mudallis, and in this narration of al-Hakim two points go against the well-known narrations: first, that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer (whereas the well-known report is that the prayer was offered individually), and second, the mention of who led the funeral prayer of al-Hasan. (The editors add that the first point does not necessarily mean Abu Bakr led the people; he may have prayed individually and said four takbirs. Either way, the chain remains weak.)
