Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1435

Ziyad bin Ilaqah narrates from his paternal uncle that Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke ill of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up towards him and said: O Mughirah! Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade reviling the dead? Why then are you reviling Ali when he has passed away?
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it in this way. However, both of them (Bukhari and Muslim) agreed upon the hadith of al-A'mash from Mujahid from Sayyidah Aishah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile the dead, for they have reached (the outcome of) the deeds they sent forth."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is hasan because of 'Amr bin Muhammad, and the remaining narrators are thiqah. The Companion Qutbah bin Malik is the paternal uncle of Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (32/19288) narrated it via the chains of Muhammad bin Bishr and Waki' through Mis'ar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is inconsistency (idtirab) in the narration of Mis'ar; according to al-Daraqutni, the preserved (mahfuz) position is that it belongs to the musnad of al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (30/18208), al-Tirmidhi (1982) and Ibn Hibban narrated it via the chain of Sufyan al-Thawri from Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah from al-Mughirah: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade reviling the dead."
Grading: One narration has the words "Do not revile the dead, for you thereby hurt the living", in which the narrator is unnamed; he is most likely Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him).
