Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1396

Bashir bin Nahik narrates: A Bashir of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (a Companion who brought good tidings), whose name in the Jahiliyyah was Zahm bin Ma'bad, told me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What is your name?" He said: Zahm bin Ma'bad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Bashir," and so that became his name. He narrates: Once I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Khasasiyah, what grievance do you have against Allah? You are walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said: I have no grievance against Allah about anything; He has done every kind of good to me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the graves of the polytheists and said three times: "These people have missed out on much good." Then he came to the graves of the Muslims and said three times: "These people have attained much good." While he (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking, his glance suddenly fell on a man walking among the graves wearing shoes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O wearer of the two sibtiyyah sandals (sandals of tanned, hairless leather)! Woe to you, take off these shoes of yours." The man looked, and when he recognised the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he took off his shoes and threw them away.

(Note / Clarification): "al-sibtiyyatayn": according to Ibn al-Athir, these were sandals made of cowhide from which the hair had been removed. They were soft and comfortable.
(Note / Clarification): According to Ibn Hibban, he (peace and blessings be upon him) perhaps ordered the sandals removed because they were of untanned carrion hide, while other hadiths show that entering a graveyard with sandals on is permissible.
(Note / Clarification): According to al-Khattabi, the prohibition was because of pride, since these sandals were worn by the well-off. He (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred humility and reverence.
(Note / Clarification): According to Ibn al-Athir, it may have been out of respect for the graves, or because of filth on them, or because of an arrogant gait.
