Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), whose ears, nose and so on had been cut off and whose body had been mutilated. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not for the fear that Safiyyah (Hamzah's sister) would be grieved, I would have left him like this until Allah raises him (on the Day of Resurrection) from the bellies of the birds and the beasts of prey." He (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him in a striped woollen cloak (namirah) which, if his head was covered, left his feet exposed, and if his feet were covered, left his head exposed; so he (peace and blessings be upon him) covered his head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray over any martyr other than him, and he said: "I am a witness over you today." He (peace and blessings be upon him) would put two or three men together in one grave and ask: "Which of them knew more of the Qur'an?" and he would place that one first in the niche (lahd); and he (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded two or three men in a single cloth.

Technical note: (2) The word "bihi" had dropped out of the manuscripts, and it has been restored from Talkhis al-Dhahabi and al-Bayhaqi.
Grading: (1) Apart from the phrase "he did not pray over any of the martyrs other than Hamzah", the rest of the hadith is sahih. According to al-Daraqutni this phrase is not preserved, and Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi erred in giving the chain as al-Zuhri from Anas. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Bukhari, Usamah bin Zayd is alone in this chain and his precision in it is not sound, since the narrations from him contradict one another. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3137) narrated it in abridged form via Uthman bin Umar: that he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been mutilated, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray over any martyr other than him. Reference / Source: Ahmad (19/12300), Abu Dawud (3136) and al-Tirmidhi (1016) narrated it. In al-Tirmidhi's version there is no exception for Hamzah; rather it mentions "he did not pray over any of them". (4948). Repetition: It will come later at numbers (2590) and (4948).
