أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثنا مسدَّد، حدثنا عبد الواحد بن زياد، حدثنا مَعمَر، عن الزُّهري، عن سعيد بن المسيّب قال: قال عليُّ بن أبي طالب: غسلتُ رسول الله ﷺ، فذهبتُ أنظُرُ ما يكون من الميِّت فلم أرَ شيئًا، وكان طيِّبًا ﵌ حيًّا وميتًا. وَلِيَ دَفْنَه وإجنانَه دون الناس أربعةٌ: عليٌّ، والعباسُ، والفضلُ، وصالحٌ مولى رسول الله ﷺ، ولُحِدَ لرسولِ الله ﷺ لَحْدًا، ونُصِبَ عليه اللَّبِنَ نصبًا (3).

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I washed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I wanted to see what (traces) occur with a deceased person, but I did not see anything of the kind. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was pure and fragrant both in his life and in his death. The honour of burying him and lowering him into the grave fell, rather than to the people at large, to these four: Ali, Abbas, Fadl and Salih, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them). A niche grave (lahd) was prepared for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and unbaked bricks (labin) were set upright over it.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they recorded only the part about the lahd from it.

(3) رجاله ثقات غير أنه قد اختُلف في وصله وإرساله، وصحَّح إرساله أبو حاتم والدارقطني، وعلى ثبوت إرساله فهو من مرسل سعيد بن المسيب، ومراسيله من أقوى المراسيل.
Grading: (3) Its narrators are trustworthy, but there is disagreement over whether it is muttasil (connected) or mursal. Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni declared the mursal version correct, and the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab are very strong.

فرواه عبد الواحد بن زياد - كما عند المصنف هنا، وعن المصنف أخرجه البيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 4/ 53، وفي "دلائل النبوة" 7/ 234 - 244 عن معمر عن الزهري، عن سعيد بن المسيب قال: قال علي بن أبي طالب … فذكره. ¤ ¤ وأخرجه أيضًا البيهقي في "الكبرى" 3/ 388، وفي "الدلائل" 7/ 253 من طريقين عن مسدد، بهذا الإسناد، مثله.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad (narrated by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi) reported it as connected: that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was washed, and so on.
وأخرجه ابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (463)، والبزار (519) من طريقين عن عبد الواحد بن زياد، به واقتصر ابن أبي عاصم في روايته على الشطر الثاني من الحديث، والبزار على الشطر الأول منه.

ورواه حماد بن زيد كما سيأتي برقم (4445)، وصفوان بن عيسى كما عند ابن ماجه (1467)، كلاهما عن معمر، عن الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن علي بن أبي طالب قال: لما غُسل النبي ﷺ … فذكراه مقتصرين على الشطر الأول.
Reference / Source: Hammad bin Zayd (number 4445) and Safwan bin 'Isa (Ibn Majah 1467) narrated it in the same way.
وخالفهما عبد الرزاق وعبد الله بن المبارك وعبد الأعلى، فرووه عن معمر، عن الزهري عن ابن المسيب قال: التمس عليٌّ من النبي ﷺ ما يلتمس من الميت فلم يجده، فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي، طبت حيًّا وميّتًا. فرووه هكذا مرسلًا.
Grading: Abd al-Razzaq, Ibn al-Mubarak and Abd al-A'la narrated it from Ma'mar as "mursal" (without Ali as intermediary).
أما رواية عبد الرزاق فهي في "مصنفه" (6094).

وأما رواية ابن المبارك فقد أخرجها ابن أبي شيبة 3/ 246 و 14/ 558، وأبو داود في "المراسيل" (415)، والضياء في "الأحاديث المختارة" 2/ (476). وقرن ابن أبي شيبة بابن المبارك عبدَ الأعلى بن عبد الأعلى.

وأخرج الشطر الثاني مرسلًا أيضًا ابن أبي شيبة 14/ 556 عن عبد الأعلى، عن معمر، به.

ورواه سليمان بن أرقم عن الزهري، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن علي موصولًا.
Variation in the chain: Sulayman bin Arqam narrated it from al-Zuhri as connected.
وخالفه صالح بن كيسان والأوزاعي، فروياه عن الزهري، عن سعيد بن المسيب، مرسلًا. كما في "العلل" للدارقطني (371)، وقال الدارقطني: والمرسل أصح. وكذلك قال أبو حاتم كما في "العلل" لابنه: 3/ 519، وزاد وحديث عبد الواحد خطأ.
Grading: Salih bin Kaysan and al-Awza'i narrated it as mursal. According to al-Daraqutni and Abu Hatim, "the mursal version is more correct", and the connected narration of Abd al-Wahid is a mistake.
وله شاهد من حديث ابن عباس بإسناد ضعيف عند أحمد 4/ (2357)، وابن ماجه (1628).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a shahid (supporting report) in the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with a weak chain (Ahmad 4/2357).

(1) أخرج مسلم (966) من حديث سعد بن أبي وقاص أنه قال في مرضه الذي هلك فيه: الحَدوا لي لحدًا، وانصِبوا عليَّ اللبِن نصبًا، كما صُنع برسول الله ﷺ.
Reference / Source: (1) In Muslim (966) it is narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Make a lahd (niche grave) for me and set unbaked bricks upright over me, just as was done for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
