Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 132

I heard Abu Sa'id bin Abi Bakr bin Abi Uthman saying: I heard Imam Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq saying: I heard Ahmad bin Yusuf al-Sulami saying: I heard Abd al-Razzaq saying: I was in Makkah, and Waki' bin al-Jarrah spoke to me about reading 'Kitab al-Wasaya' to him and his son. I said: "When I reach Mina, I will narrate it." So when I reached Mina, I brought my book and narrated it to him. Then I went to Makkah for the visit (of the House), and Abu Usamah met me and said to me: "O Yemeni! That Ru'asi boy (Waki') has deceived you." I asked: "How did he deceive me?" He said: "You took your book to him and narrated the hadiths to him (first)." I said: "It is no wonder that he deceived me, for Bishr bin Rafi' narrated to me through Yahya bin Abi Kathir, with the chain of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The believer is simple-hearted and noble-natured, and the wicked person is cunning and mean-natured'" (that is, Waki' took advantage of this believer's simplicity). The narrator says: Then Abu Usamah took out his tablets and said: "Dictate this hadith to me." I said: "By Allah! I will not dictate it to you." So he went away.
I heard Ali bin Isa narrating from al-Husayn bin Muhammad bin Ziyad, and he from Muhammad bin Yahya, that Abu al-Asbat al-Harithi is Bishr bin Rafi' himself.
Imam al-Hakim says: I have mentioned Bishr bin Rafi' here only as a supporting narration (shahid), while our Shaykhs have spoken of him leniently. I have also found another supporting narration for this hadith from the hadith of Kharijah:
