It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him unconscious. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called out to him, but he did not answer. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (We belong to Allah and to Him we return) and said: "O Abu al-Rabi'! We have been overcome in your matter." At this the women began to cry out and weep, and Ibn Atik began to silence them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave them (to weep), but when 'wajaba' (the inevitable) happens, then let no weeping woman weep." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by 'wujub'? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When he dies." Then his daughter said: By Allah! I had hoped that you would be a martyr, for you had already prepared your equipment for jihad. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah has granted him his reward according to his intention. And what do you count as martyrdom?" They said: Being killed in the path of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Apart from being killed in the path of Allah, there are seven kinds of martyrdom: the one who dies of plague is a martyr; the one who drowns is a martyr; the one who dies of pleurisy (dhat al-janb, a disease of the lungs) is a martyr; the one who dies of a disease of the stomach is a martyr; the one who is burned to death is a martyr; the one who dies crushed under a collapsed building is a martyr; and the woman who dies while pregnant or during childbirth is a martyr."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Its narrators are Madinans of Quraysh, and in my view, in the collection of Imam Malik's hadith compiled by Imam Muslim, the hadith of Imam Malik's shaykhs begin with this very hadith.
