Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 130

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believer is simple-hearted and noble-natured, and the wicked person is cunning and mean-natured."
This is a hadith which the earlier students of al-Thawri narrated with a connected chain, but the later ones corrupted (its chain). As for al-Hajjaj bin Furafisah, the two Shaykhs did not record from him; however, I heard Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub say that Abbas bin Muhammad al-Duri said that according to Yahya bin Ma'in there is no harm in al-Hajjaj bin Furafisah (that is, he is reliable), and Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Hatim says: I heard my father say that al-Hajjaj bin Furafisah is a righteous and devout elder. It has a supporting narration from Yahya bin Abi Kathir in which the chain is established.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: This narration is also in Imam al-Hakim's "Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 117), and via him Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7762).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya, al-Tahawi, Ibn al-A'rabi, Abu Nu'aym, al-Quda'i and al-Bayhaqi (10/195) narrated it through various routes from Abu Dawud al-Mubaraki with this same chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not found this narration anywhere through this particular route.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Several narrators (such as Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri and Muhammad bin Kathir al-Abdi) narrated it through the chain of Sufyan al-Thawri from al-Hajjaj bin Furafisah, but they left one narrator between al-Hajjaj and Abu Salamah unnamed ("from a man").
Important point: This is what the author means by the chain being spoiled (ifsad): the intermediary in it is unnamed.
