Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1291

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the time of death drew near for Adam (peace be upon him), he said to his sons: O my sons! Go and pick some of the fruits of Paradise for me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So his sons set out, and on the way the angels met them. The angels asked: O sons of Adam! Where are you heading? They said: Our father has sent us to pick some of the fruits of Paradise for him. The angels said: Go back, for your task has been taken care of." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So they returned with them until they entered upon Adam (peace be upon him). When Hawwa' (peace be upon her) saw them, she was frightened and began drawing close to Adam (peace be upon him) and clinging to him. At this Adam (peace be upon him) said to her: Keep away from me, move away from me; it was because of you that I was put (to trial). Get out from between me and the angels of my Lord." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So the angels took his soul, then they washed him, applied perfume to him, and shrouded him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the angels offered the funeral prayer over him, dug a grave for him, and buried him. Then the angels said: O sons of Adam! This is your practice (sunnah) regarding your dead, so do likewise."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. It is of the type in which only a single narrator is found reporting from the Tabi'i, for no one other than al-Hasan al-Basri narrates from Utayy bin Damrah al-Sa'di. In my view, the two Shaykhs identified another hidden defect ('illah) in it, namely that this narration is also reported from al-Hasan al-Basri without mention of Utayy:

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This is a gharib hadith; there is no harm in its narrators, but there is a difference over whether it is marfu' or mawquf, as Imam al-Bukhari indicated in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/79). 'Utayy (Ibn Damrah al-Sa'di) is a trustworthy narrator.
Technical note: Abu al-Muwajjih refers to Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari, Isma'il refers to Ibn 'Ulayyah, and al-Hasan refers to al-Hasan al-Basri.
Grading: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in his additions to Musnad Ahmad (35/21240) as mawquf (the saying of a Companion).
Repetition: It will come later without mention of 'Utayy, and in abridged form, at numbers (3075, 4042, 4048).

Technical note: (2) Rather, his son 'Abd Allah bin 'Utayy also narrated from him, as is reported from Yahya bin Ma'in.
