حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا أحمد بن عبد الجبار، حدثنا يونس بن بُكَير، حدثنا يحيى بن أيوب البَجَلي، أخبرنا أبو زُرْعة بن عمرو بن جَرِير، عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله: "إنَّ الرجل تكونُ له المنزلةُ عند الله، فما يَبلُغُها بعَمَلٍ، فلا يزال يَبتَلِيهِ بما يَكرَه حتى يُبلِّغَه ذلك" (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a servant has a high rank with Allah which he cannot attain through his deeds alone, so Allah Almighty continues to afflict him with things he dislikes (hardships) until He brings him to that rank."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: (2) Its chain is hasan.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (2908) من طريق محمد بن العلاء بن كريب، عن يونس بن بكير، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (2908) narrated it via the chain of Muhammad bin al-'Ala' from Yunus bin Bukayr.
(3) تعقبه الذهبي في "تلخيصه" بقوله: يحيى وأحمد ضعيفان، وليس يونس بحجة. قلنا: والحق أن هؤلاء أحاديثهم من قبيل الحسن وأحمد العطاردي - وإن كان أنزلهم مرتبة - قد توبع.
Grading: (3) 'Allamah al-Dhahabi objected in al-Talkhis that Yahya and Ahmad are weak. But the truth is that their hadiths are of the "hasan" level.
