It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray three rak'ahs of witr, reciting in the first rak'ah "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High", in the second "Say: O disbelievers", and in the third "Say: He is Allah, the One", "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind".
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Sa'id bin Ufayr is the imam of the people of Egypt without dispute, and he has brought this hadith with such clear detail as shows that the rak'ah which is the witr is separate and distinct from the two rak'ahs before it.
