It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever washes (his head) on Friday and takes a bath, and draws near to the imam and listens attentively in silence, for him there will be, for every step, the reward of a year's fasting and night prayer."
This narration does not make the established authentic hadith defective, for several reasons: first, that Hassan bin Atiyyah has explicitly mentioned Sayyiduna Aws bin Aws hearing from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); second, that Thawr bin Yazid is of a lower rank than those narrators in being used as evidence; and third, that Uthman al-Shaybani is unknown (majhul).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (1) Al-Hakim wrote "al-Shaybani" here, which is wrong; the correct name is "Uthman al-Shami", as in Ibn Hajar and in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir".
Grading: (2) The hadith is sahih, but this chain is weak because Uthman al-Shami is majhul (unknown). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Uthman erred by adding "Abdullah bin Amr" to the chain, whereas Aws heard directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/6954) and al-Bayhaqi (3/227) narrated it through the chain of Rawh bin Ubadah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bayhaqi says that Uthman al-Shami erred in both the chain and the text, and that the correct version is what the others narrated: Aws from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Grading: There is no error in the text, since it agrees with the preceding sahih narrations; for details see the notes on Musnad Ahmad.
