Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I used to lead my father (Ka'b bin Malik) after he lost his sight. Whenever I took him out for the Friday prayer and he heard the adhan, he would supplicate and seek forgiveness for Abu Umamah As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I remained with him for a long time, and whenever he heard the adhan of Friday he would do the same. I asked: Dear father! I see that whenever you hear the adhan of Friday you seek forgiveness for Abu Umamah; what is the reason for this? He said: O my son! He was the first person who led us in the Friday prayer in Madinah, at the place "Hazm" in the Harrah of Banu Bayadah, which is called "Naqi' al-Khadimat". I asked: How many of you were there that day? He said: Forty men.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. It is a supporting narration (shahid) for the hadith that Imam Bukhari alone recorded: that the first Friday prayer in Islam after the Friday prayer in Madinah was held at "Juwatha", the village of Abd al-Qays.

Grading: (1) The chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq. Wahb bin Jarir narrates from his father, Jarir bin Hazim. 13/ 35. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1069), Ibn Majah (1082) and Ibn Hibban (7013) narrated it through the routes of Ibn Ishaq. In the printed edition of Ibn Hibban the name "Abdullah bin Ka'b" appeared by mistake; the correct name is "Abd al-Rahman", as Ibn Hajar indicated. (4919). Repetition: It will come later with al-Hakim through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr at no. (4919).
(Note / Clarification): "Hazm" means a crack or low-lying part of the ground. "Hazm Bani Bayadah" is the name of a place in Madinah.
(Note / Clarification): "Al-Naqi'" means standing water. "Naqi' al-Khadimat" was a place near Madinah where floodwater collected. Technical note: "Al-Khadimat" has been recorded with a fathah on the kha' and with all three vowels on the dad.
(4371). Reference / Source: (1) It is in al-Bukhari's "Sahih" at no. (892, 4371).
(Note / Clarification): "Juwatha" is a historical site in al-Ahsa' (Saudi Arabia), 17 km from the city of al-Hufuf.
