It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that two men from the people of Iraq came to him and asked him whether the bath (ghusl) of Friday is obligatory. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever takes a bath, that is better and purer. And I will tell you how the bath began. In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the people were needy; they wore woollen clothing and watered the date palms carrying waterskins on their backs. The mosque was narrow and its roof was low. Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out for Friday on an intensely hot summer day. His (peace and blessings be upon him) pulpit was small, consisting of only three steps. He (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people, and the people sweated in those woollen clothes, and the smell of sweat and wool began to rise from their bodies until they began to cause discomfort to one another. Then that smell reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was on the pulpit, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! When it is this day, take a bath, and whoever of you has it should apply the best perfume or oil he has."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Technical note: (2) Manuscript (Z) has the word "kada".
Grading: (3) The chain is "jayyid" (good); there is some criticism of Amr bin Abi Amr (the client of al-Muttalib) which brings it slightly below the level of sahih. Ikrimah is the client of Ibn Abbas. Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2419) narrated it through the chain of Sulayman bin Bilal with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (353) narrated it through the route of al-Darawardi. (7581). Repetition: It will come later with this same chain and text at no. (7581). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of A'ishah in al-Bukhari (902) and Muslim (847), that people used to come to the Friday prayer from far away covered in dust and sweat, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only you had purified yourselves (taken a bath) for this day of yours." Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second narration of A'ishah (al-Bukhari 903), that people did their own work and would come to the Friday prayer in that state, so it was said to them: "If only you had bathed."
(Note / Clarification): Ibn Abbas's saying "why the bath began": according to al-Sindi, its purpose was to show that the original reason for the bath (hardship and sweat) has now gone, and so it is not obligatory but recommended. Important point: This is supported by the saying of Ibn Abbas in the narration of Abu Dawud that when Allah granted ease, people wore better clothes and the trouble of sweat came to an end (so the original urgency of the bath no longer remained).
