It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty fashioned the form of Adam (in Paradise), He left him for as long as Allah willed. So Iblis began circling around him, and when he saw that he was hollow inside (ajwaf), he understood that this was a creature that would not be able to control itself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and it has reached me that he recorded it at the end of the book.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim narrated it (2611) via Abu Bakr bin Nafi' from Bahz bin Asad with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (in several places), Muslim (2611) and Ibn Hibban (6163) narrated it through various routes from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain. Important point: This narration will come ahead at number (4036) through the route of Affan bin Muslim from Hammad bin Salamah. Note / Clarification: The phrase "yutifu bihi" means going around it or circling it. Note / Clarification: The phrase "la yatamalak" means that he does not control himself and cannot hold it back from desires. Important point: Imam al-Nawawi says in "Sharh Muslim" that it may also mean being unable to repel whisperings, or being unable to control oneself in anger, and that what is meant here is the human race (the children of Adam) as a whole.
