Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (B) and the printed book the word has been corrupted to "anbiyyan".
Grading: This chain is, Allah willing, sahih, and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also declared it sahih in "Fath al-Bari" (1/142).
Note / Clarification: Ibn Abi Dhi'b's name is Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (4674) narrated it through two routes from Abd al-Razzaq.
Details of the narration: In it, "Uzayr" is mentioned in place of "Dhu al-Qarnayn", and it does not contain the part that "the hudud (prescribed punishments) are expiations".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar (8519), al-Bayhaqi (8/329), al-Hinna'i and Ibn Abd al-Barr (1553) narrated it in full through the route of Abd al-Razzaq.
Important point: In al-Bazzar's narration too, the name of Uzayr appears instead of Dhu al-Qarnayn.
Important point: This narration will come again with the author at number (2204) through the route of Abd al-Razzaq, and at number (3723) through the route of Adam bin Abi Iyas from Ibn Abi Dhi'b.
Grading: This hadith has another chain with al-Bazzar (8541) and Ibn Abd al-Barr (1552), which is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator named Sa'd bin Sa'id has weakness, and his brother Abdullah is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned, wholly unreliable).
Grading: This hadith is narrated from Ma'mar as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/153) from Abdullah bin Muhammad, from Hisham bin Yusuf al-San'ani, from Ma'mar, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from al-Zuhri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bukhari says that this (its being mursal) is more correct, and that it is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hudud are expiation".
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Bukhari means the hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in his Sahih al-Bukhari (18); further detail on it will come ahead at number (3279).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi quoted this statement of Imam al-Bukhari in his "Sunan" and then commented on it.
Important point: Al-Bayhaqi says that if this hadith of Abu Hurayrah is proven sahih, it is possible that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it at a time when knowledge of it had not yet been given to him by Allah; then, when the knowledge came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said what is narrated in the hadith of Ubadah.
General principle: Qadi Iyad also said something similar to reconcile the two hadiths.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar approved of this position in "Fath al-Bari" (1/142).
