Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 106

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, span by span, cubit by cubit and yard by yard, so much so that if they entered the hole of a lizard, you too would enter it following them." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Does this mean the Jews and the Christians?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then who else?"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah al-Laythi.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 15/(9819) and 16/(10827), and Ibn Majah (3994) narrated it through two routes from Muhammad bin Amr with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (14/8340) via Muhammad bin Zayd bin al-Muhajir through the chain of Sa'id al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah, and its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: A similar narration was transmitted by Imam Ahmad (8308) and al-Bukhari (7319) through the route of Ibn Abi Dhi'b, with the chain of Sa'id al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah.
Details of the narration: However, in this narration Persia and Rome are mentioned instead of the Jews and Christians.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The mention of the Jews and Christians is supported by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Sahih al-Bukhari (3456) and Sahih Muslim (2669).
Note / Clarification: See further narrations on this subject with the author at numbers (444), (445) and (8470).
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Nawawi says in "Sharh Muslim" that "al-sanan" (with a fathah on the sin and the nun) means the path.
Important point: The mention of the span, the forearm's length and the lizard's hole is an illustration of following them completely, and what is meant is resembling them in sins and acts of disobedience, not in disbelief (because one who adopts disbelief leaves the fold of Islam).
