Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Abu Muslim is Ibrahim bin Abd Allah al-Kajji al-Hafiz.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (16/10768), al-Bukhari (1377), Muslim (588) (131) and Ibn Hibban (1019) narrated it via Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, but in their versions it does not have the restriction "at the end of the prayer" (dubur al-salah).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15/9447) and al-Nasa'i (2198, 7890, 7904) narrated it without any restriction, via Yahya bin Abi Kathir.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (16/10181) and Muslim (588) (128) narrated it via the chain of Waki' from al-Awza'i from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, in which the wording is a "command" (seek refuge), not a report of his (peace and blessings be upon him) own supplication.
Reference / Source: The same command is also narrated through another chain of al-Awza'i, recorded by Ahmad (12/7237; 16/10180), Muslim (588, 589) (130), Abu Dawud (983), Ibn Majah (909), al-Nasa'i (1234, 7897) and Ibn Hibban (1967) via Muhammad bin Abi A'ishah and Tawus. Some narrations explicitly state "when one of you has finished the final tashahhud".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (7906) and Ibn Hibban (1002) narrated it as a report of his (peace and blessings be upon him) own supplication, that he used to say it in his prayer, but without specifying the tashahhud.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (13/7964; 15/9855, 9357, 9387; 16/10039, 10070, 10249), Muslim (585; 589 (133)), al-Nasa'i (7903, 7893, 7895, 2199) and Ibn Hibban (1018) narrated it, without restriction to the tashahhud or to the prayer, via Abd Allah bin Shaqiq, Abu Rafi', Abu Alqamah al-Ansari, Muhammad bin Ziyad and Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman; all of them report it as his (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication, except Abu Alqamah, who narrated it as a "command". Abd Allah bin Shaqiq does not mention the trial of life and death, Abu Rafi' and Muhammad bin Ziyad do not mention the punishment of Hell, and Humayd confines it to seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.
Repetition: This hadith will come via the route of Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj at number (1976), where it is given as his (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the hadith of A'ishah, which will come later at number (1418); it contains the restriction to the end of the tashahhud, and its chain is sahih.
