It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to respond to the imam's salam, to love one another, and to greet one another with salam.
This hadith has a sahih chain, and Sa'id bin Bashir was the imam of the people of Syria in his time, but the two Shaykhs did not record it because of the weakness of his memory (as Abu Mushir described), although a narrator like him is not abandoned for so small a matter.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
5/ 232. Grading: (1) God willing, this is a "hasan hadith". Sa'id bin Bashir is weak but is taken into account in corroborations, and he is corroborated here; al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Samurah has already been discussed (number 151). Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hajar and Ibn al-Qattan graded it sahih or hasan. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1001) narrated it via Abu al-Jumahir Muhammad bin Uthman, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (922) narrated it via the chain of Hammam bin Yahya from Qatadah; it does not mention "al-tahabb" (loving one another), but the chain is jayyid (good).
(Clarification): "Replying to the imam" means that when giving the salam to end the prayer, one should intend to reply to the imam's salam.
