Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for some task of his. When I returned, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting squatting and eating dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a tailor invited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to a meal. When he brought the food, it contained old oil and pumpkin. I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was searching for pumpkin in the bowl. From that time, I also began to like pumpkin.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tying up an animal and using it as a target for practice.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted permission to Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) to wear silk garments because of lice.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to write a letter to the Romans, the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted that those people only read sealed letters. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a silver ring made. Its whiteness is still before my eyes. The inscription on it was: "Muhammad Rasul Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) married Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the mother of Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). They had a son, whom Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) loved very much. One day, the child became extremely ill. Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) had a routine that he would get up for the Fajr prayer, perform ablution, present himself in the court of the Prophet, and offer prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would stay there until about midday, then return home, take a nap, eat food, and after the Zuhr prayer, get ready and leave again, returning only at the time of Isha.

One day, when he left at noon, his son passed away after him. His wife, Hazrat Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), covered the child with a cloth. When Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he asked about the child. She replied that he is better than before. Then she placed the dinner before him, and he ate. Hazrat Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) adorned herself. Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) lay down on his bed and rested his head. She says, "I stood up, applied perfume, and lay down with him on the bed." When he smelled the fragrance, he felt the same desire that every man feels for his wife. In the morning, he began to prepare as usual. Hazrat Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Abu Talha! If someone entrusts something to you, you benefit from it, and then he demands it back and takes it from you, would you be distressed over it?" He said, "No." She said, "Then your son has passed away." Upon this, he became very upset and went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the entire incident of eating, applying perfume, and intimacy.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is astonishing that the child lay beside you and you both had intimacy." They said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that is exactly what happened." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "May Allah bless your night." Thus, Hazrat Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) became pregnant that very night, and a boy was born to them. In the morning, Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, "Wrap him in a cloth and take him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and take some good dates with you." He himself did not give him anything to taste nor did he give him anything. I picked him up, wrapped him in a cloth, and presented him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying, "A boy." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Alhamdulillah," and said, "Bring him to me." I handed him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked if I had Ajwa dates. I replied, "Yes," and took out the dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a date, put it in his mouth, and chewed it. When it mixed with his saliva, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to the child to taste. The child began to enjoy the taste of the date and started sucking it. It was as if the very first thing that entered his intestines was the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The Ansar love dates very much." Then he named him Abdullah bin Abi Talha. His progeny flourished, and he was martyred in Iran.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) freed Hazrat Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Huyayy, and made her freedom her dowry.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not raise his hands in any supplication, except at the time of Istisqa (prayer for rain), when he (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his hands so high that the whiteness of his blessed armpits would become visible.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man to accept Islam. He replied, "I do not like it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if you do not like it, still accept Islam."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I used to serve drinks to Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), Suhail bin Bayda (may Allah be pleased with him), and some other companions (may Allah be pleased with them) before the command of the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, and I would serve them so much that its effects would become apparent on them. One day, a Muslim came and said, "Do you not know that alcohol has been made forbidden?" Upon hearing this, they did not say, "Wait, let us investigate first," but rather said, "Anas! Whatever alcohol is in your vessel, pour it all out." By Allah! After that, they never went near it again, and that too was only nabidh made by mixing fresh and dried dates; this was what was called alcohol at that time.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting the Talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah together, as he (peace be upon him) was saying: "Labbaik Umrah wa Hajj."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade anyone from drinking while standing. I asked about eating, so he said, "That is even more severe than this."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such people will come to you whose hearts will be even softer than yours." Accordingly, once the Ash'ariyyin came, among whom was Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. When they approached near Madinah Munawwarah, they began to recite these rajaz verses: "Tomorrow we will meet our friends, that is, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Muslims heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) calling out at the well of Badr: "O Abu Jahl bin Hisham! O Utbah bin Rabi'ah! O Shaybah bin Khalaf! Did you find true what your Lord had promised you?" "As for me, I have found true what my Lord promised me." The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Are you calling out to people who have died?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "You do not hear what I am saying any better than they do."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the Battle of Tabuk and approached near Madinah Munawwarah, he said: "There are some people in Madinah Munawwarah that whichever path you traveled and whichever valley you crossed, they were with you in that." The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Even though they were in Madinah, were they with us?" He replied, "Yes! Even though they were in Madinah, because some excuse had kept them back."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the time of Fajr. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time of the rising of Fajr and the prayer was established. Then the next day, he led the prayer when it was quite bright, and said: "Where is the one who asked about the time of Fajr prayer?" The time for Fajr prayer is between these two times.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Banu Salamah once intended to move from their old residence and settle near the mosque. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he did not like the idea of Madinah becoming empty. Therefore, he said, "O Banu Salamah! Do you not wish to attain the reward for the steps you take towards the mosque?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the sound of a child crying while leading the prayer, so he shortened the prayer. We understood that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had shortened the prayer because of the child's mother; this was an expression of compassion for the child.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have not seen anyone perfecting and shortening the prayer more than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

Humaid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a person asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) have a ring made?" He replied, "Yes! Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer until midnight and said, 'People have prayed and gone to sleep, but as long as you waited for the prayer, you were counted as being in prayer.' At that time, the whiteness of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) ring is still before my eyes."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the time for prayer arrived, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was conversing privately with a man in the mosque. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for prayer, the people had already fallen asleep.

Humaid says that a person asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the night prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he replied: "At whatever time of the night we wished to see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying, we could see him, and whenever we intended to see him sleeping, we could also see him (sleeping)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked about the wages for cupping. He replied that Abu Taybah performed cupping for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be given two sa’ of barley, and he spoke to his master, so he reduced his share. And he said: The best treatment is cupping and the use of Indian costus.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the prayer was established, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said, "Straighten your rows and stand close together, for I see you from behind me as well."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the Ansar so that he could distribute among them a share of the wealth that had come from Bahrain. But they said, "First, set aside an equal share for our Muhajir brothers." Seeing their spirit of selflessness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "After me, you will face preferential treatment, but you should remain patient until you meet me."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was conveyed to me, but I did not hear it myself: "A people will come among you who will worship and be religious to such an extent that people will be amazed at their abundance of worship, and they themselves will fall into self-admiration. These people will exit from the religion just as an arrow exits from the prey."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the three Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them) used to begin the recitation in prayer with "Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil 'Alamin."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day I was standing and serving people with Fasiqh (a type of drink), when a person came and said that alcohol has been declared forbidden. They said, "Anas! Pour out all the alcohol that is in your vessel." The narrator investigated about the drink from him, so he replied that it was only Nabidh made by mixing fresh and dried dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking with the support of his two sons’ shoulders. He asked, “What is the matter with him?” They informed him that he had vowed to perform Hajj on foot. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah is free of need from this that this person should put himself in hardship.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to ride, so he rode.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is to bury it.

Isma'il narrated to us, Hisham informed us similarly, and said: "Its expiation is to bury it."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who was driving a sacrificial animal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him to ride it. He said, "It is a sacrificial animal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if it is a sacrificial animal."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the name of Allah and said takbeer while performing the sacrifice.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two white, horned rams as sacrifice, and he would mention the name of Allah and say Takbeer. I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would slaughter them with his own hand and would place his foot on their side.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jew killed an Ansari girl for the sake of the jewelry she was wearing, and crushed her head with stones. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also, in retribution, crushed his head between two stones.

Yasar says that I was walking with Thabit Banani, and on the way he passed by some children, he greeted them with salam and said: It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some children who were playing, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with salam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Some people from my Ummah will be admitted into Hell; when they are burnt and become like coal, they will be admitted into Paradise. The people of Paradise will ask: Who are these people? It will be said to them: These are the ones who were in Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah together as follows: "Labbaik bihajjat wa 'umrat ma'an."
