It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In times past, three men were traveling when it began to rain. The three of them took shelter in a cave on a mountain. A rock fell from above and blocked the entrance of the cave. They said to one another, "The rock has fallen, the traces of our footsteps have disappeared, and no one knows of our presence here except Allah. Therefore, let each person present before Allah a deed of truthfulness that he has done, and pray to Allah."
One of them said, "O Allah! You know that my parents were very old, and I used to give them milk from my goats every evening. One day, I was delayed (in returning from the forest), and when I arrived, they had already fallen asleep. My wife and children were crying from hunger, but it was my habit that I would not give them (the milk) until my parents had drunk first. (So I was greatly perplexed.) I did not think it appropriate to wake them, nor did I think it good to leave them as they were, lest they become weak from not eating. So I stood waiting for them to wake up until morning. O Allah! If in Your knowledge this action of mine was done out of fear of You, then remove this calamity from us." The rock opened up about one third.
The second person said, "O Allah! You know that a laborer worked for me for eight seers of rice as his wage, but after working, he left his wage and went away. I took that measure of rice and sowed it, and as a result, I bought cows and oxen from its yield. After some days, that man came to me asking for his wage. I said, 'Take these cows and oxen.' He said, 'I am owed only a measure of rice by you.' I replied, 'Take these cows and oxen; they have been obtained through those very grains of rice.' O Allah! If in Your knowledge I did this only out of fear of You, then remove this calamity from us." By the blessing of his prayer, the rock opened up about two thirds.
The third person said, "O Allah! You know that there was a woman who was the most beloved to me. When she gave herself into my control, I immediately stood up and left her, and I left behind a hundred dinars. O Allah! If this action of mine was done only out of fear of You, then remove this calamity from us." So the rock moved away, and they came out and began to walk about.
