It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up at night from sleep, used the miswak, prayed two rak‘ahs, and went back to sleep. Then he woke up again, used the miswak, performed ablution, prayed two rak‘ahs, and went back to sleep. In this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed six rak‘ahs, then prayed three witr, and then prayed two rak‘ahs (the Sunnah of Fajr).

Nadr bin Anas says that once I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he was giving fatwas to people but was not attributing any of his fatwas to the Prophet (peace be upon him). During this, an Iraqi man came and said that I am from Iraq, and I do the work of making images. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) ordered him two or three times to come closer. When he came near, he said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: "Whoever makes images in this world will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection to put a soul into that image, and he will not be able to put a soul into it."

Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomever He lets go astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and I also bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah's servant and His Messenger."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once he spent the night at the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up during the night, went outside, raised his gaze towards the sky, and then recited this verse from Surah Al-Imran: « ﴿إِنَّفِيخَلْقِالسَّمَاوَاتِوَالْأَرْضِ . . . . . سُبْحَانَكَفَقِنَاعَذَابَالنَّارِ﴾ [آل عمران : 190-191]» "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, . . . . . So glory be to You, save us from the punishment of the Fire." Then he entered the house, used the miswak, performed ablution, and stood to pray. After a short while, he lay down for a while, then again went outside, looked towards the sky, and repeated the aforementioned actions two more times.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the shade of one of his chambers, and some Muslims were also present there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man will come to you who sees with the eye of Satan. When he comes to you, do not speak to him." After a short while, a man with a bluish complexion came and said, "O Muhammad! (peace and blessings be upon him) Why did you speak ill of me?" And he began to swear oaths about it. Regarding this dispute, this verse was revealed: «﴿يَوْمَيَبْعَثُهُمُاللّٰهُجَمِيعًافَيَحْلِفُونَلَهُكَمَايَحْلِفُونَلَكُمْ . . . . .﴾ [المجادلة : 18]» "On the Day when Allah will raise them all up, they will swear to Him as they swear to you . . . . ." That they swear falsely and do not even realize it.

When he reached a place called Qudayd, a glass of milk was presented to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) broke his fast and ordered the people to break their fast as well (and later made up for it).

The people behind him said "Subhan Allah," so he said, "What is the matter with you?" (Then he understood himself and) returned and completed the remaining prayer, and at the end performed two prostrations of forgetfulness. When this was mentioned in the presence of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said that he did not turn away from the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Stand up and teach your brothers, for they do not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed the amount of Sadaqat al-Fitr as half a sa’ of wheat, or one sa’ of barley, or one sa’ of dates, which is obligatory upon every free person and slave, male and female.

However, the oath is upon the one against whom the claim is made."

People started calling out, "Prayer, prayer!") At that time, there was a man from Banu Tamim among the people, and he began to loudly say, "Prayer, prayer." At this, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) became angry and said: "Do you want to teach me the Sunnah? We have performed a 'collective' (apparent) joining of two prayers with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that today I performed the Zuhr prayer in the valley of Batha behind an old man, and he said the takbeer twenty-two times in one prayer. He would say the takbeer when going into prostration and when raising his head from it as well. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "May your mother lose you! This is how Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray."

Yazid bin Hurmaz says that once Najdah bin Amir wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asking about the ruling on killing children, and also whether women used to participate in jihad along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would assign them a share. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) had me write the reply to this letter. In the reply, he wrote: You have asked me whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ever killed any child among the polytheists. So remember! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never killed any of their children, and you should not kill anyone either. However, if you come to know about a child in the same way as Khidr (peace be upon him) came to know about the child whom he killed, then that is a different matter (and this is not possible for you). You also asked whether, if a woman or a slave participated in battle, would their share in the spoils of war be fixed? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fix any share for them, but he would certainly give them something from the spoils of war.

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) bear witness regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) vessels called Duba’, Hantam, Muzaffat, and Naqir. Then he recited this verse: «﴿وَمَاآتَاكُمُالرَّسُولُفَخُذُوهُوَمَانَهَاكُمْعَنْهُفَانْتَهُوا﴾ [الحشر : 7]» "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from, abstain from it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once I stayed the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her after performing the Isha prayer, as it was her turn that night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak‘ahs, then lay down. After a while, he said: "Has the child gone to sleep?" although I was listening. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying on the prayer mat: «اَللّٰهُمَّاجْعَلْفِيقَلْبِينُورًاوَفِيسَمْعِينُورًاوَفِيبَصَرِينُورًاوَفِيلِسَانِينُورًاوَأَعْظِمْلِينُورًا» "O Allah! Place light in my heart, and place light in my ears, my eyes, and my tongue, and grant me more and more light."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyidah Dubaa‘ah bint Zubair bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am a heavy woman and intend to perform Hajj. (How do you command me to enter into Ihram?) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you enter into Ihram, stipulate the condition that I will become free from Ihram wherever, O Allah, You restrain me; for you are permitted to do so."

Is performing Hajj every year obligatory? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hajj is obligatory only once in a lifetime, whatever is more than that will be voluntary Hajj."

I have seen that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prostrated, the whiteness of his blessed armpits could be seen (meaning his hands were so far apart).”

We dismounted from our ride and joined the prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not forbid us nor did he send us back.

Shu’bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he was ill. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was wearing a silk cloak of istabraq at that time, and in front of him was a brazier in which there were some images. Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu al-Abbas! What is this garment? He asked: What do you mean? He replied: This is istabraq (silk). He said: By Allah! I did not realize that, and I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing it due to pride and oppression, and all praise is due to Allah, we are not like that. Then Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What about these images in the brazier? He said: As you can see, we have burned them in the fire.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the name of Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was Barrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed this name to Juwayriyyah. The narrator says that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out after prayer and came to Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! After you left, I have been sitting here continuously. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "After I left you, I said a few words which, if weighed, would outweigh all the glorifications you have recited, and those words are: «سُبْحَانَاللّٰهِعَدَدَخَلْقِهِوَسُبْحَانَاللّٰهِرِضَاءَنَفْسِهِوَسُبْحَانَاللّٰهِزِنَةَعَرْشِهِوَسُبْحَانَاللّٰهِمِدَادَكَلِمَاتِهِوَالْحَمْدُلِلّٰهِمِثْلُذَلِكَ»."

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from the plain of Arafat, people began to hasten their mounts. At the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man announced: "O people! Racing camels and horses is not an act of virtue, so make calmness obligatory upon yourselves." Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from there, I did not see any mount raising its hands and running swiftly.
