Qais bin Hubtar says that I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about white, green, and red pitchers, so he replied that regarding this, the first to ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) were the delegation of Banu Abdul Qais. They said: We obtain this sediment; which vessels are lawful for us? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not drink from (vessels made of) Dubba, Muzaffat, Naqir, or Hantam, but you may drink from water skins." Then he said: "Allah has forbidden wine, gambling, and the 'Kubah', and likewise every intoxicant is forbidden." Sufyan says: I asked Ali bin Badhimah about the meaning of "Kubah," and he explained that it means "drum."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in previous times, the jinn used to listen to heavenly news; they would hear one thing and add ten things of their own to it, and deliver it to the soothsayers. The one thing which they had actually heard would prove true, and what they added from themselves would turn out to be false. And before this, stars were not thrown at them, but when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, whichever of the jinn reached their place, a shower of shooting stars would begin upon them and they would be burned. They complained about this to Iblis. He said: The reason for this is nothing except that something new has happened. So he sent out his armies, and some of them passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who was praying between the mountains of Nakhlah. They came to Iblis and informed him of this news. He said: This is the real reason that has occurred on the earth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once some Jews came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Abul Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)! We want to ask you five questions. If you answer them for us, we will know that you are truly a Prophet and we will begin to follow you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a promise from them in the same way that Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him) took from his sons. When they said, "Allah is a witness over what we say," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Now present your questions."
They asked the first question: "What is the sign of a Prophet?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep."
They asked the second question: "Tell us, how does a child become male or female?" He said, "The two fluids meet; if the man's fluid prevails over the woman's fluid, the child becomes male, and if the woman's fluid prevails over the man's fluid, a girl is born."
They asked the third question: "Tell us, what did Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him) make unlawful for himself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He suffered from a disease called 'sciatica.' He felt that he liked camel's milk the most, so he made its (milk and) meat unlawful for himself." They said, "You have spoken the truth."
Then they asked the fourth question: "What is thunder (the rumbling and flashing of clouds)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is an angel among the angels of Allah, who is appointed over the clouds. In his hand is an iron rod with which he strikes the clouds, and he drives them wherever Allah has commanded."
They said, "The sound we hear, where does it come from?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That is his voice." They confirmed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this as well and said, "Now one question remains. If you answer it, we will pledge allegiance to you. Every Prophet has an angel who brings revelation to him. Which angel comes to you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Jibreel!"
They said, "That same Jibreel who brings war, fighting, and punishment? He is our enemy. If you had mentioned Mika'il, who brings mercy, vegetation, and rain, then it would have been acceptable." Upon this, Allah revealed this verse of Surah Al-Baqarah: «﴿قُلْمَنْكَانَعَدُوًّالِجِبْرِيلَ . . . . .﴾ [البقرة : 97]» "(O Prophet!) Say: Whoever is an enemy to Jibreel . . . . ."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite « ﴿الم o غُلِبَتِالرُّومُ﴾ » in both the well-known and the lesser-known ways, and he used to say that it was always the wish of the polytheists that the Persians would prevail over the Romans, because the Persians were idolaters, while the Muslims wished that the Romans would prevail over the Persians because they were People of the Book. They mentioned this to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Romans will indeed prevail." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this prophecy before the Quraysh. They said: Set a term between us and you; if, according to our view, the Persians prevail, you will give us such and such, and if, according to your view, the Romans prevail, we will give you such and such. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) set a term of five years, but during that period the Romans did not appear to prevail, so he mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not set a term within ten years?" Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in fact, the word «﴿بِضْعِ﴾» that appears in the Qur'an applies to anything less than ten. Thus, within that period, the Romans prevailed, and this is the background of the opening verses of Surah Ar-Rum.

Second, tell us about the nature of the fluid of man and woman, and how is a male child born? Third, tell us about the state of sleep of this unlettered Prophet? And fourth, who is the angel who brings revelation to him?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do you swear to me by Allah that if I answer these questions, you will follow me?” They made a very firm covenant with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I ask you by the One Who revealed the Torah to Moses (peace be upon him), do you know that once Jacob (peace be upon him) became very ill, and when his illness prolonged, he vowed to Allah that if Allah granted him recovery from this illness, he would make his most beloved drink and most beloved food unlawful for himself? And among those foods, camel meat was the most beloved, and among drinks, camel milk was the most beloved?” They confirmed this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Allah! Bear witness.” Then he said, “I ask you by Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, and Who revealed the Torah to Moses (peace be upon him), do you know that the fluid of a man is white and thick, and the fluid of a woman is yellow and thin? Whichever of the two fluids prevails, by Allah’s command, the child resembles that one. So if the man’s fluid prevails over the woman’s, by Allah’s command, the child is a boy, and if the woman’s fluid prevails over the man’s, by Allah’s command, the child is a girl?” They also confirmed this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Allah! Bear witness.” Then he said, “I ask you by the One Who revealed the Torah to Moses (peace be upon him), do you know that the eyes of this unlettered Prophet sleep, but his heart does not sleep?” They said, “Yes!” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Allah! Upon this, we will either join you or separate from you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “My friend is Jibreel (Gabriel), the Trustworthy, and whichever Prophet Allah sent, he was his friend.” Upon hearing this, the Jews said, “Now we cannot stay with you. If any other angel besides him had been your friend, we would have surely followed you and affirmed you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “What prevents you from affirming me in the presence of Jibreel, the Trustworthy?” They said, “He is our enemy.” Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «﴿قُلْمَنْكَانَعَدُوًّالِجِبْرِيلَ . . . . . كَأَنَّهُمْلَايَعْلَمُونَ﴾ [البقرة : 97-101]» “Say: Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel . . . . . as they do not know.” And at that time, they returned carrying anger upon anger from Allah.
