Asim bin Damrah reports that once a person asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers during the day. He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer a total of sixteen rak‘ahs. After performing the Fajr prayer, he would wait for a short while, and when the sun had risen in the east to the extent that it is in the west after the ‘Asr prayer, he would stand and offer two rak‘ahs of prayer. Then he would wait for a short while, and when the sun had risen in the east to the extent that it is in the west after the Zuhr prayer, he would stand and offer four rak‘ahs of prayer. Then, after the sun had passed its zenith, he would offer four rak‘ahs before Zuhr, two rak‘ahs after Zuhr, and four rak‘ahs before ‘Asr.

Qais bin ‘Abad says that once we were with Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Whenever he saw a gathering of people, or climbed a hill, or descended into a valley, he would say: «سُبْحَانَاللّٰهِ،صَدَقَاللّٰهُوَرَسُوْلُهُ.» I said to a man from Banu Yashkur, “Come, let us ask the Commander of the Faithful what he means by «صَدَقَاللّٰهُوَرَسُوْلُهُ».” So we both went to him and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! We see that whenever you see a gathering, descend into a valley, or climb a hill, you say «صَدَقَاللّٰهُوَرَسُوْلُهُ». Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you something about this?” Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away when he heard our question, but we insisted greatly. When he saw our persistence, he said, “If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me anything, he told it to the people as well. But the people turned against Sayyiduna ‘Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) until they killed him, and after that, the condition and actions of the people besides me were not any better. Then I also felt that I had a right to the caliphate, so I mounted this ride. Now Allah knows whether we did right or wrong.”
