It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a large blessed head, a complexion that was white with a reddish tinge, and a thick beard. His joints were very strong, his palms and feet were full, and there was a long line of hair from his chest to his navel. The hair on his head was thick and slightly curly. When he walked, he would take small steps, and it seemed as if he was descending from a slope. He was neither very tall nor very short in stature. I have not seen anyone like him before or after him, peace and blessings be upon him.

Abu Burdah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was sitting with my father when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came. He greeted us with salam and entrusted my father with some matter of the people, and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me: "Ask Allah for guidance, and by guidance, take it to mean guidance of the path, and ask Allah for correctness and soundness, and by that, take it to mean the straightness of an arrow." Also, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing a ring on the index or middle finger. The narrator says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing, so I could not properly understand the gesture of his fingers. Then he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from red-striped and silk garments. We asked: O Commander of the Faithful! What is meant by "Maisarah" (this word is used in the hadith)? What is this thing? He said: Women used to make something to place on the saddles of their husbands' mounts (which is called a saddlecloth), that is what is meant. Then we asked what is meant by "Qassiyah"? He said: The garments from Syria in which patterns like citron are made. Abu Burdah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when I saw garments made of linen, I understood that these are the ones.
