Musnad of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 1241
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ يَعْنِي الرَّازِيَّ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْمَكْتُوبَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray sixteen rak‘ahs at night apart from the obligatory prayers.
Hadith 1242
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ الرَّازِيُّ ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، وَالْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْنَا عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، أَلَا تُحَدِّثُنَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، تَطَوُّعَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ : وَأَيُّكُمْ يُطِيقُهُ ؟ قَالُوا : نَأْخُذُ مِنْهُ مَا أَطَقْنَا ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي مِنَ النَّهَارِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْمَكْتُوبَةِ " .
Asim bin Damrah says that once we asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers during the day. He replied: You do not have the strength to pray as he did. We said: Please tell us, we will try to act upon it as much as we are able and capable. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer sixteen rak‘ahs during the day apart from the obligatory prayers.
Hadith 1243
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، وَشَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ ، فَأَدُّوا رُبُعَ الْعُشُورِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from paying zakat on horses and slaves, therefore you must pay zakat on silver in any case, the nisab of which is that one dirham will be obligatory on every forty."
Hadith 1244
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَلِيُّ ، إِنِّي أُحِبُّ لَكَ مَا أُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِي ، وَأَكْرَهُ لَكَ مَا أَكْرَهُ لِنَفْسِي ، لَا تَقْرَأْ وَأَنْتَ رَاكِعٌ ، وَلَا وَأَنْتَ سَاجِدٌ ، وَلَا تُصَلِّ وَأَنْتَ عَاقِصٌ شَعْرَكَ ، فَإِنَّهُ كِفْلُ الشَّيْطَانِ ، وَلَا تُقْعِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ ، وَلَا تَعْبَثْ بِالْحَصَى ، وَلَا تَفْتَرِشْ ذِرَاعَيْكَ ، وَلَا تَفْتَحْ عَلَى الْإِمَامِ ، وَلَا تَتَخَتَّمْ بِالذَّهَبِ ، وَلَا تَلْبَسْ الْقَسِّيَّ ، وَلَا تَرْكَبْ عَلَى الْمَيَاثِرِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Ali! I like for you what I like for myself, and I dislike for you what I dislike for myself. Do not recite the Noble Qur'an while in the state of bowing (ruku') or prostration (sajdah). Do not pray with your hair braided, for this is the way of Satan. Do not sit on your buttocks between the two prostrations. Do not play with pebbles during prayer. Do not spread your arms on the ground in prostration. Do not prompt the imam. Do not wear a gold ring. Do not wear silk clothing. And do not ride on a red saddlecloth."
Hadith 1245
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَسْأَلُهَا عَنِ الْخُفَّيْنِ ، فَقَالَتْ : عَلَيْكَ بِابْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَاسْأَلْهُ ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَافِرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : جَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ ، وَيَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً لِلْمُقِيمِ " .
Shuraih bin Hani says that I asked Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over the socks, so she said: "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he has more knowledge about this issue because he used to accompany the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during travels." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The traveler is permitted to wipe over the socks for three days and three nights, and the resident for one day and one night."
Hadith 1246
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى ، عَنْ شُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ الْعَبْسِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْأَحْزَابِ ، صَلَّيْنَا الْعَصْرَ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، مَلَأَ اللَّهُ قُبُورَهُمْ وَأَجْوَافَهُمْ نَارًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Khandaq, we performed the Asr prayer between Maghrib and Isha, upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire, for they did not allow us to perform the Asr prayer until the sun had set."
Hadith 1247
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام ، فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيَّ " ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ وَلَا بَوْلٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibreel came to me but did not enter the house." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "Why did you not come inside?" He replied, "We do not enter a house in which there is a picture or urine."
Hadith 1248
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : وحَدَّثَنَاه شَيْبَانُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ ، عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَبَّةَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبَّةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيَّ " ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ مِثْلَهُ نَحْوَهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : وَكَانَ أَبِي لَا يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ ، يَعْنِي : كَانَ حَدِيثُهُ لَا يَسْوَى عِنْدَهُ شَيْئًا .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1249
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْبَيْسَرِيُّ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تُبْرِزْ فَخِذَكَ ، وَلَا تَنْظُرْ إِلَى فَخِذِ حَيٍّ وَلَا مَيِّتٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Ali! Do not expose your thigh in front of anyone, and do not look at the thigh of any living or dead person."
Hadith 1250
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، وَحُسَيْنٌ ، وَأَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هُبَيْرَةَ بْنِ يَرِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِفَاطِمَةَ : لَوْ أَتَيْتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلْتِهِ خَادِمًا ، فَقَدْ أَجْهَدَكِ الطَّحْنُ وَالْعَمَلُ ؟ قَالَ حُسَيْنٌ : إِنَّهُ قَدْ جَهَدَكِ الطَّحْنُ وَالْعَمَلُ ، وَكَذَلِكَ قَالَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ ، قَالَتْ : فَانْطَلِقْ مَعِي ، قَالَ : فَانْطَلَقْتُ مَعَهَا فَسَأَلْنَاهُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَا أَدُلُّكُمَا عَلَى مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ إِذَا أَوَيْتُمَا إِلَى فِرَاشِكُمَا ، فَسَبِّحَا اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ ، وَاحْمَدَاهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ ، وَكَبِّرَاهُ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ ، فَتِلْكَ مِائَةٌ عَلَى اللِّسَانِ ، وَأَلْفٌ فِي الْمِيزَانِ " ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : مَا تَرَكْتُهَا بَعْدَمَا سَمِعْتُهَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ ؟ قَالَ : وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that marks have appeared on your hands from grinding flour; if you were to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and request a servant from him (perhaps things would become easier), she said, "You should come with me as well." So I went with her, and we presented our request before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you something that is better for you than a servant? When you lie down on your bed, say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. In words, these are a hundred, but on the scale of deeds, they are equal to a thousand." So from that day onwards, I never abandoned them. A questioner asked, "Not even on the night of the Battle of Siffin?" He replied, "Yes! Not even on the night of the Battle of Siffin."
Hadith 1251
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ وَقَدْ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ ، وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ ، فَقُلْتُ : لَوْ قُمْتَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ كَانَ أَوْطَأَ لَكَ ؟ فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " مَنْ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ ، صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ، وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ ، وَمَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ، وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person remains seated on his prayer mat after the prayer, the angels send blessings upon him, and the angels’ blessing is this supplication: O Allah! Forgive him, O Allah! Have mercy on him. Similarly, if he sits waiting for the next prayer, the angels also send blessings upon him, and their blessing is this supplication: O Allah! Forgive him, O Allah! Have mercy on him."
Hadith 1252
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ مَرْزُوقٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الضُّحَى حِينَ كَانَتْ الشَّمْسُ مِنَ الْمَشْرِقِ في مَكَانِهَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the Duha prayer when the sun had risen from the east as much as it is near to setting in the west at the time of Asr.
Hadith 1253
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي سَمِينَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَان ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ سَأَلَ مَسْأَلَةً عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى ، اسْتَكْثَرَ بِهَا مِنْ رَضْفِ جَهَنَّمَ " ، قَالُوا : مَا ظَهْرُ غِنًى ؟ قَالَ : " عَشَاءُ لَيْلَةٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks someone for something while he has enough to suffice him, he is only increasing the number of coals of Hell in his stomach." The people asked, "What is meant by 'enough to suffice him'?" He replied: "The dinner of the night."
Hadith 1254
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ كُلِّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السَّبُعِ ، وَكُلِّ ذِي مِخْلَبٍ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ ، وَعَنْ ثَمَنِ الْمَيْتَةِ ، وَعَنْ لَحْمِ الْحُمُرِ الْأَهْلِيَّةِ ، وَعَنْ مَهْرِ الْبَغِيِّ ، وَعَنْ عَسْبِ الْفَحْلِ ، وَعَنِ الْمَيَاثِرِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating every predatory animal that hunts with canine teeth, and every bird that hunts with its talons, and also forbade consuming the price of carrion, the meat of domesticated donkeys, the earnings of a prostitute, the earnings obtained by mating a bull, and red saddlecloths.

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، قَالَ : سَارَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى النَّهْرَوَانِ فَقَتَلَ الْخَوَارِجَ ، فَقَالَ : اطْلُبُوا ، فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " سَيَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِكَلِمَةِ الْحَقِّ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ، سِيمَاهُمْ ، أَوْ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ ، فِي يَدِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ سُودٌ " ، إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ شَرَّ النَّاسِ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا الْمُخْدَجَ ، قَالَ : فَخَرَرْنَا سُجُودًا ، وَخَرَّ عَلِيٌّ سَاجِدًا مَعَنَا .
Tariq bin Ziyad says that we went out with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to fight the Khawarij. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought them and said: "Behold! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Soon a people will emerge who will speak rightly, but their words will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the truth just as an arrow goes out of the prey. Their sign will be that among them there will be a man whose hand will be incomplete, and in his hand (palm) there will be black hair.'" Now, if this is the case, then you have purified the world from the existence of the worst man, and if it is not so, then you have killed the best man. Hearing this, we began to weep. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Search for him. So we searched for him and found a man with an incomplete hand. Upon seeing him, we fell into prostration, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also prostrated with us.
Hadith 1256
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ الْبَصْرَةِ حِينَ ظَهَرَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ : هَذَا الْخَطِيبُ الشَّحْشَحُ ، " سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ بَعْدَهُمْ ، يَصْنَعُ اللَّهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed first, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed second, and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed third. After that, trials surrounded us; now Allah will do whatever He wills.
Hadith 1257
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الْحَنَفِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : قِيلَ لِعَلِيٍّ وَلِأَبِي بَكْرٍ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ : " مَعَ أَحَدِكُمَا جِبْرِيلُ ، وَمَعَ الْآخَرِ مِيكَائِيلُ ، وَإِسْرَافِيلُ مَلَكٌ عَظِيمٌ يَشْهَدُ الْقِتَالَ ، أَوْ قَالَ : يَشْهَدُ الصَّفَّ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Badr, it was told to me and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that with one of you is Angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) and with the other is Angel Mikaeel (peace be upon him), and Angel Israfeel (peace be upon him) — who is a great angel — is also present on the battlefield.
Hadith 1258
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed four rak‘ahs before Zuhr.
Hadith 1259
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ بَيَّاعِ السَّابِرِيِّ ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ الْخَارِفِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ : " سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ ، فَكَانَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed first, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed second, and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed third. After that, trials surrounded us; now Allah will do whatever He wills.
Hadith 1260
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدُوَيْهِ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ ، وَأَوْسَطِهِ ، وَآخِرِهِ ، وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer Witr in the early, middle, and last parts of the night, however, in the end, he (peace and blessings be upon him) became consistent in offering it in the last part of the night.
Hadith 1261
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ الْهِلَالِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي مِنَ التَّطَوُّعِ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ ، وَبِالنَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray eight units of voluntary prayer and twelve units during the day.
Hadith 1262
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَنْدَلٍ ، وَسُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، جَمِيعًا فِي سَنَةِ سِتٍّ وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ السَّلُولِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَلَا إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ كَصَلَاتِكُمْ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ ، وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " أَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ ، أَوْتِرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ وَتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ " ، وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَنْدَلٍ ، وَمَعْنَاهُمَا وَاحِدٌ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Witr is not as obligatory as the obligatory prayers (there is no evidence for it from the Qur'an), however, since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered Witr, therefore, O people of the Qur'an! You should also offer Witr, because Allah is Witr (One) and He loves odd numbers.
Hadith 1263
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا فِطْرٌ ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ النَّوَّاءِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُلَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَبْلِي نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا قَدْ أُعْطِيَ سَبْعَةَ رُفَقَاءَ نُجَبَاءَ وُزَرَاءَ ، وَإِنِّي أُعْطِيتُ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ : حَمْزَةُ ، وَجَعْفَرٌ ، وَعَلِيٌّ ، وَحَسَنٌ ، وَحُسَيْنٌ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ ، وَالْمِقْدَادُ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَأَبُو ذَرٍّ ، وَحُذَيْفَةُ ، وَسَلْمَانُ ، وَعَمَّارٌ ، وَبِلَالٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every prophet before me was given seven companions, nobles, and ministers, whereas I have been given fourteen." Sayyiduna Hamza, Sayyiduna Ja'far, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Hasan, Sayyiduna Husayn, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq, Sayyiduna Miqdad, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, Sayyiduna Salman, Sayyiduna Ammar, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with them all).
Hadith 1264
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ " تَوَضَّأَ ، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى النَّعْلَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ ، لَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا " .
Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution; he wiped over his sandals and said: If I had not seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) washing the upper part of the foot, I would have thought that the lower part of the foot was more deserving of being washed (because it touches the ground more).
Hadith 1265
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي مَالٍ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that zakat does not become obligatory on a person's wealth until a full year has passed over it.
Hadith 1266
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ : " إِنَّ الشِّيعَةَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَرْجِعُ ! قَالَ : كَذَبَ أُولَئِكَ الْكَذَّابُونَ ، لَوْ عَلِمْنَا ذَاكَ مَا تَزَوَّجَ نِسَاؤُهُ ، وَلَا قَسَمْنَا مِيرَاثَهُ " .
Asim bin Damrah says that I asked Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Shia believe that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will return again? He replied: These liars are lying; if we were certain of this, then their wives would not have married other husbands and we would not have distributed their inheritance.
Hadith 1267
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنِّي قَدْ عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ ، وَلَا صَدَقَةَ فِيهِمَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from zakat on horses and slaves, therefore there is no zakat on them."
Hadith 1268
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الرَّقِّيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ أَبُو عُمَرَ ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ زَاذَانَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَظْهَرَهُ ، شُفِّعَ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ قَدْ وَجَبَتْ لَهُمْ النَّارُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites the Qur'an and becomes proficient in it, then on the Day of Resurrection, his intercession will be accepted for ten members of his family for whom Hell had become obligatory."
Hadith 1269
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِشْكَابٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَال َرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَفَوْتُ عَنِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ فِي الصَّدَقَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from zakat on horses and slaves."
Hadith 1270
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلْمٍ خَلِيلُ بْنُ سَلْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ أَوْ كَلْبٌ " ، وَكَانَ كَلْبُ لِلْحَسَنِ فِي الْبَيْتِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "We do not enter a house in which there is a picture or a dog." At that time, there was a small dog belonging to Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) in the house.
Hadith 1271
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عُبَادٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ : " أَرَأَيْتَ مَسِيرَكَ هَذَا ، عَهْدٌ عَهِدَهُ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَمْ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ : مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى هَذَا ؟ قُلْتُ : دِينَنَا دِينَنَا ، قَالَ : مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِ شَيْئًا ، وَلَكِنْ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتُهُ " .
Qais bin Abad says that I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) during a journey, "Tell me, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advise you regarding this journey, or is it based on your own opinion?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "What is your purpose in asking this question?" I replied, "Only for the sake of religion." He said, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not advise me regarding this; it is merely an opinion."
Hadith 1272
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ لِلْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رُمْحٌ ، فَكُنَّا إِذَا خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزَاةٍ خَرَجَ بِهِ مَعَهُ ، فَيَرْكُزُهُ فَيَمُرُّ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَحْمِلُونَهُ ، فَقُلْتُ : لَئِنْ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَأُخْبِرَنَّهُ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّكَ إِنْ فَعَلْتَ لَمْ تَرْفَعْ ضَالَّةً " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) had a spear. Whenever we set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for any expedition, he would take that spear with him. He would fix it in the ground, and when people passed by, they would pick it up and hand it to him. Seeing this, I thought in my heart that when I reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I will definitely inform him of this whole situation. (So when I mentioned it,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you start doing this, then no lost item will be picked up to be returned to its owner.”
Hadith 1273
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، قَالَ : " تَوَضَّأَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَضْلَ وَضُوئِهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَوَضَّأُ " .
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed each part of the body three times while performing ablution and drank the leftover water from the ablution. Then he said, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) doing it in this manner."
Hadith 1274
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ ، قَالَ : بَلَغَنِي عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ ، فَغَدَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ ، فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ فِي جَنَازَةٍ ، فَحَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " أُعْطِيَ كُلُّ نَبِيٍّ سَبْعَةَ نُجَبَاءَ ، وَأُعْطِيَ نَبِيُّكُمْ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ نَجِيبًا ، مِنْهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَعَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every prophet before me was given seven companions, nobles, and ministers, whereas I have been given fourteen, among whom are Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Umar al-Faruq, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and Ammar (may Allah be pleased with them all)."
Hadith 1275
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ رَجُلَ صِدْقٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ نَسْتَشْرِفَ الْعَيْنَ وَالْأُذُنَ ، وَأَنْ لَا نُضَحِّيَ بِعَوْرَاءَ ، وَلَا مُقَابَلَةٍ ، وَلَا مُدَابَرَةٍ ، وَلَا شَرْقَاءَ ، وَلَا خَرْقَاءَ " ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي إِسْحَاقَ : أَذَكَرَ عَضْبَاءَ ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، قُلْتُ : مَا الْمُقَابَلَةُ ؟ قَالَ : هِيَ الَّتِي يُقْطَعُ طَرَفُ أُذُنِهَا ، قُلْتُ : فَالْمُدَابَرَةُ ؟ قَالَ : الَّتِي يُقْطَعُ مُؤَخَّرُ الْأُذُنِ ، قُلْتُ : مَا الشَّرْقَاءُ ؟ قَالَ : الَّتِي يُشَقُّ أُذُنُهَا ، قُلْتُ : فَمَا الْخَرْقَاءُ ؟ قَالَ : الَّتِي تَخْرِقُ أُذُنَهَا السِّمَةُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to “carefully examine the ears and eyes of the sacrificial animal; do not sacrifice a one-eyed animal, nor sacrifice an animal that is muqabalah, mudabarah, sharqa’, or kharqa’.” The narrator says: I asked Abu Ishaq, “Did Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also mention ‘adba’?” He said: “No.” Then I asked, “What is meant by muqabalah?” He replied: “An animal whose ear is cut from one edge.” Then I asked, “What is meant by mudabarah?” He replied: “An animal whose ear is cut from the back.” I asked the meaning of sharqa’, so he said: “An animal whose ear is split.” I asked the meaning of kharqa’, so he explained: “An animal whose ear is torn.”
Hadith 1276
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ تَحْبِسُوا لُحُومَ الْأَضَاحِيِّ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade keeping the meat of the sacrifice with oneself for more than three days.
Hadith 1277
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، فَقَالَتْ : سَلْ عَلِيًّا فَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِهَذَا مِنِّي ، هُوَ كَانَ يُسَافِرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَأَلْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ ، وَلِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ " .
Shuraih bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over leather socks (khuffs), so she said: "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he has more knowledge about this issue because he used to accompany the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during travels." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For a traveler, it is permitted to wipe over the leather socks for three days and three nights, and for a resident, for one day and one night."
Hadith 1278
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ يَعْنِي أَبَا عُمَرَ الْقَارِئَ ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ زَاذَانَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَظْهَرَهُ وَحَفِظَهُ ، أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ الْجَنَّةَ ، وَشَفَّعَهُ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ كُلُّهُمْ قَدْ وَجَبَتْ لَهُمْ النَّارُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites the Qur'an and becomes proficient in it, then on the Day of Resurrection, his intercession will be accepted for ten members of his family for whom Hell had become obligatory."
Hadith 1279
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسْنَاءِ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ حَنَشٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ " أُضَحِّيَ عَنْهُ بِكَبْشَيْنِ " ، فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَفْعَلَهُ ، وَقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ : " ضَحَّى عَنْهُ بِكَبْشَيْنِ : وَاحِدٌ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَالْآخَرُ عَنْهُ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : فَقَالَ : إِنَّهُ أَمَرَنِي فَلَا أَدَعُهُ أَبَدًا " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once instructed me to offer two rams in sacrifice on his behalf, so I will continue to offer sacrifice on his behalf until the end.
Hadith 1280
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحْرِزُ بْنُ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ حَنَشٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَاضِيًا ، فَقَالَ : " إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْخَصْمَانِ ، فَلَا تَقْضِ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمَا حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ مِنَ الْآخَرِ ، فَإِنَّهُ يَبِينُ لَكَ الْقَضَاءُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me as a judge and instructed: "When two parties come to you, do not pass judgment after hearing only one side, but listen to both sides; you will see how you are to judge."
