Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakrah that he said: I went to Syria and I thought to myself, if I go to Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr and greet him. So I went to him and greeted him. He asked, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakrah." He said, "It is near that the Bani Qantura (the Turks or the Christians of Rome) will expel you from the land of Iraq." I asked, "Will we return then?" He said, "Do you desire this?" I replied, "Yes." He said, "That return will be a spring of life for you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Wahb that he said: One of the hypocrites died, and Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) did not perform his funeral prayer. Hazrat Umar asked him, "Is he among the hypocrites?" He replied, "Yes!" Hazrat Umar then asked him, "For the sake of Allah, tell me, am I among the hypocrites?" He replied, "No, and I will never inform anyone about this in the future (as to who is a hypocrite and who is not)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: None of the hypocrites remain except four, one of whom is an old man who, due to his old age, does not feel the coolness of water. The narrator says that a person asked Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him): Who are these people who break into our houses and steal our belongings? He replied: Woe to you, these are wicked people.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid that Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) recited { فَقَاتِلُوا أَئِمَّۃَ الْکُفْرِ } (that is, "kill the leaders of disbelief") and said that the people referred to in this verse have not yet been killed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Bakhtari that a person said, "O Allah, destroy the hypocrites." Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If they are destroyed, then you will not have taken revenge on your enemy."

It is narrated from Hazrat Shamar that he said Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you like that you kill the most sinful among the people?" They replied, "Yes." Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "At that time, you will be the most sinful."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Hearts are of four types. One is the inverted heart; this is the heart of a hypocrite. The heart wrapped in a covering is the heart of a disbeliever. The clear heart, as if a lamp is shining within it, is the heart of a believer. And the heart in which there is both hypocrisy and faith is like a boil in which there is pus and blood, and its example is like a tree that is watered with both polluted and pure water; whichever water prevails over it, it will become like that.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The hypocrites among you nowadays are worse than the hypocrites of the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: We asked, O Abu Abdullah, how can this be? He replied: Because they used to conceal their hypocrisy, while these people display it openly.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: After the seventieth (70th) year, I do not care if I roll a stone from above your mosque that crushes ten of you.

Hazrat Makhool narrates from a person who said: We were with Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him). He took some pebbles and placed them one over the other. Then he said to us: Do you see this light that you are seeing? We replied: We are seeing something hidden. He said: In the same way, falsehood will rise above the truth until you will not see the truth except in the state in which you are seeing these pebbles.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "It is near that evil will be sent down upon you from the sky until it reaches the wilderness." He was asked, "O Abu Abdullah, what is this wilderness?" He replied, "Desolate land."

It is narrated from Abu Tufail that a man from the tribe of Banu Muharib, who was called Amr bin Sula’i, came to Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him). He said to Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him), “O Abu Abdullah, tell us what you have seen and witnessed.” Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Amr bin Sula’i, tell me about Muharib—are they from Mudar?” He replied, “Yes.” So Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Indeed, Mudar will continuously kill every believer and put Muslims into trials until Allah, His angels, and the believers will fight them, until, despite their abundance everywhere, they will not be able to defend themselves. Tell me about Muharib—are they from Qais Ailan?” He said, “Yes.” He (Hudhaifa) said, “When you see the tribe of Ailan, when they have come to Syria, then protect yourself.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: O group of Mudar, come close! By Allah, you will kill every believer and put them into trials until Allah, His angels, and the believers will fight against you, to the extent that despite your abundance everywhere, you will not be able to defend yourselves. His companions asked: When we are in such a state, why would we do this? He replied: Surely, there will be a leader among you, and there will be some who will go ahead among you, like those who go ahead among horses.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The tribe of Mudar will not leave any believing servant of Allah except that they will either put him into tribulation or kill him, until Allah, the angels, and the believers will fight them, to the extent that they will not be able to defend themselves." A man said to him, "O Abu Abdullah, you are saying this even though you also belong to the tribe of Mudar." He replied, "I am saying what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Verily, the people of Basra will not open any door of guidance, nor will they leave any door of misguidance, and the storm has been lifted from the entire earth except Basra.

Hazrat Rabee’ah bin Jushan narrates that he said: I went to the region of Syria and attended the gathering of Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr. He asked: Which people are you from? We replied: From the people of Basra. He said: O people of Basra, prepare for battle. We asked: With what? He said: With provisions and water skins. Today, the best wealth is those camels on which a man seats his family and on which he carries grain, and the best wealth is a strong-hoofed horse (this is the best wealth these days). By Allah, soon Banu Qantura will drive you out of Basra until they make you into a group. The narrator says: We asked: Who are Banu Qantura? He said: In the book, I find it written like this, and as for the rest, why this description has been given.

Narrated from Abu Huraira: What will be your condition when neither a dinar nor a dirham nor a measure will be given to you?

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Majliz that he said: Hazrat Umar intended to visit all the cities. Hazrat Ka'b submitted to him, "Do not go to Iraq, because nine out of ten parts of evil are there."

It is narrated from Qasama bin Zubair: I heard Abu Musa saying that Basra has four names (Basra, Khuraybah, Tadmor, Mu'tafikah).

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin that he said: I saw Kathir bin Aflah (who was martyred on the day of Harrah) in a dream. I said to him, "O Ibn Aflah, how are you?" He replied, "I am in goodness." I asked, "Are you among the martyrs?" He said, "No, the slain among the Muslims are not martyrs, but we are intelligent and wise."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abi that he asked Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, “What prevents you from fighting?” He replied, “Nothing prevents me until you give me such a sword that can distinguish between a believer and a disbeliever.” (Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas used to keep himself separate from tribulations and remained apart during all the events of Jamal, Siffin, Taym, and the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman.)

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr that people will fight among themselves over the demands of the calls of ignorance, at the time of the killing or expulsion of a leader. Then one of the two groups will prevail, even though it was previously humiliated. The neighboring enemies will become inclined towards them and will make things easy for them, and people will continue to fall into disbelief.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr that he said: Destruction is for both sides of the head, destruction is for both sides of the head. The narrator, Shu’bah, says that I asked: What is meant by both sides? He replied: Iraq and Egypt, and by the head is meant Syria.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr that he said: One house will be sunk into the ground beside its neighboring house, another house will be sunk into the ground beside its neighboring house, wherever these injustices will occur.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ghalib bin Ajrad that he says: I and my companion came to Hazrat Abu Abdullah bin Amr while he was narrating (hadith) to the people. He asked, "Who are you both?" They replied, "We are from the people of Basra." He said, "The adjoining areas of Basra are obligatory upon you both." When the people left him, we came closer to him and asked, "What is your opinion about your statement (where are you from) and your statement that the adjoining areas of Basra are obligatory upon you?" He replied, "Indeed, the houses of Basra and its surroundings, when they become filled, are shared among the inhabitants there." Thabit, the narrator, says that whenever Ghalib bin Ajrad entered a spacious place, he would run until he exited from it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Uthman Nahdi that he said: A man came to Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I want to go to Basra." Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If it is necessary for you to go, then stay at its outskirts; do not stay in its center."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Yahya that he said: Ask Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) who is a hypocrite? So he replied: The one who professes Islam but does not act upon it.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr that he said: The Day of Judgment will not be established until you commit adultery on the roads like animals; Satan will overpower them and turn them towards the worship of idols.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that he said: There will be a confrontation between the Quran and the king. The king will trample upon the commands of the Quran. Alas, my distress! Alas, my distress! You will not be able to escape from it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that he said: Soon a fire will emerge from Yemen which will drive people. In the morning, when they halt, it will halt with them at the same place, and wherever they stop to rest at noon, it will also stop with them there, and in the last part of the night when they travel, it will travel with them. When you hear about it, then go towards Syria.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas narrates from Hazrat Ka'b that he said: When you see that rain has been withheld, then know that people have withheld zakat, so Allah Almighty has withheld what He had (i.e., rain). And when you see that swords have been unsheathed, then know that the command of Allah Almighty is being neglected, so they begin to take revenge on one another. And when you see that adultery has become widespread, then know that usury has spread.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Suhan that he said: Salman said to me, "What will be your condition when there is a conflict between the Quran and the king?" I replied, "At that time, I will be with the Quran." He said, "At that time, Zaid, you will be very good." Abu Qurrah, who disliked tribulations, said, "At that time, I will sit in my house." Hazrat Salman said, "Even if you are among the servants, you will be with one of the two groups."

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Wahb that it was said: When we returned from Nahrawan, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There were some people from Yemen who participated with us. We asked: What was the manner of their participation, etc.? He said: It was (due to) desire of the self.

It is narrated from Abdullah, he said: Indeed, if a person is present at the time of an evil act and dislikes it, then he is like the one who was not present at the time of that evil. And if a person is not present at the time of an evil act but likes it, then he is like the one who was present at the time of that evil.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, a man will participate in a tribulation, but he will have no status in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Sabi’ that he said: Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon before us and said: This part will be made blood-soaked up to here, and by that he meant the part from the beard to the head. The people said: Tell us about this person so we may kill him. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, then you would kill for me a man who is not my killer. Then the people said: Appoint a caliph over us. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, rather I will leave you in the same state in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left you (i.e., without appointing a caliph). The people said: What will you say to your Lord when you meet Him? He replied: I will say, O Allah! When I was among them, You were also among them. If You had willed, You would have reformed their condition, and if You had willed, You would have worsened their condition.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that he said: By Allah, if I were to move a strong mountain, I would prefer that more than removing a king whose term of rule has been appointed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amir bin Matar that he said: I was with Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Soon you will see people who will sell their religion cheaply, just as a woman makes her private parts cheap. Remain steadfast on the way you are upon today, for it is the clear path. O Amir bin Matar, what will be your condition when people choose one path and the Qur'an has another path? With whom will you be among the two? I said: I will remain with the Qur'an, I will live with it and die with it. Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: At that time, you will be the only one.

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah, he said: Indeed, the people before you became confused and divided until they were destroyed. If any one of them was called from behind, he would answer from the front, and if he was called from the front, he would answer from behind.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: What will be your condition when such a time comes upon you that one of you will leave his room to go to his toilet, and when he returns, his face will have been transformed and he will have been turned into a monkey. He will look for his place to sit, but he will not be able to find it.
