Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that surely a time will come upon you in which the best among you will be the one who does not enjoin good. One of the people said, "Will such a time come upon us in which we will see evil and not stop it? No, by Allah, we will surely do so." The narrator says that Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) was pointing towards his eye with his finger and saying, "By Allah, you have lied." He said this three times. That man said, "I have lied and he has spoken the truth."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Surely, a time will come upon you in which a person will wish for death, whether he is killed or he adopts disbelief, and surely a time will come upon you in which a person will wish for death without poverty or hunger.

Narrated from Hazrat Abu Bakrah, he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a land called Basrah or Basirah, on one side of which there is a river called Dijlah (Tigris), with many date palms. There, the Banu Qantura will descend (who are referred to as the Turks, and according to the statement of Hakim, by this is meant the Christians of Rome). People will be divided into three groups: one group will join their origin and will be destroyed; the second group will take their souls and disbelieve; and the third group will leave their children behind and fight. Their slain will be martyrs, and Allah Almighty will grant victory to those who remain.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Hour will not be established until you fight with people whose shoes will be their hair, and the Hour will not be established until you fight with people who will have small eyes.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Day of Judgment will not be established until you fight with people whose shoes will be made of hair, and the Day of Judgment will not be established until you fight with people whose eyes will be small, whose noses will be small, as if their faces are like shields placed one above the other.

It is narrated from Hazrat Tariq that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that my companions will be martyred in great numbers.

It is narrated from Usaid bin Hudair that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the Ansar: "Soon after me, you will see that others will be given preference over you, so be patient until you meet me at the Pond."

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym that he said: When the time of martyrdom of Hazrat Husayn came, he said, "O Allah! You will judge between Your servants concerning that in which they are differing."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ghuraif that we were twelve thousand in number at the place of Maskan in the vanguard of Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), in such a state that we were longing for death. Due to the intense fighting with the people of Syria, drops (of blood) were dripping from our swords. Abu Amratah was our commander. Abu Ghuraif says: When the news of the reconciliation between Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Muawiyah reached us, it was as if our backs were broken with grief and anger at this news. The narrator Abu Ghuraif said: When Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Kufa, one of us, whose kunyah was Abu Amir, stood up and said, "Peace be upon you, O humiliator of the believers!" Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "O Abu Amir, do not say this, but I disliked that I should kill them for the sake of seeking rule."

It is narrated from Hazrat Riyah bin Harith that he said: After the death of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and delivered a sermon before the people. He praised and glorified Allah, then said: Surely, that which is to come is near. Undoubtedly, the command of Allah is bound to happen, even if people dislike it. By Allah, I do not like that I should gain even as much as a grain of millet from the affair of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in which even a little blood has been shed, knowing that this affair will not bring me any benefit from things that harm me. So, join your mounts.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umair bin Ishaq that he said: I and another man went to visit Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that man, "Ask me before you are unable to ask me." That person said, "I do not want to ask you anything. May Allah grant you well-being." The narrator said: Hazrat Hasan stood up and entered the toilet, then came back to us and said, "I did not come out to you until I had thrown out a piece of my liver, which I was turning over with this stick. I have been given poison many times, but nothing was as severe as this time." Hazrat Umair said: The next day we went to him in the morning, and he was in the throes of death. The narrator Umair said: Hazrat Husain came and sat by his head and said, "O brother, who gave you the poison?" He replied, "Do you want to kill him?" He said, "Yes." Hazrat Hasan said, "If it is the one whom I suspect, then Allah will punish him severely, and if he is innocent, then I do not like that an innocent person should be killed."

It is narrated from Hazrat Bishr bin Ghalib that Abdullah bin Zubair met Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Makkah Mukarramah. Hazrat Abdullah asked, "O Abu Abdullah, I have heard that you intend to go to Iraq." He replied, "Yes." Hazrat Abdullah said, "Do not do so, for indeed they are the killers of your father and the ones who struck your brother's abdomen with a spear. If you go to them, they will kill you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabla bint Musfah that she said: Hazrat Malik bin Zumrah advised the Mujahideen regarding their weapons, "Beware, fighting will be done with those who create discord." The narrator, Muhammad bin Musa, said: His brother said near his head, "O brother, are you saying this at the time of death?" He replied, "It is so." His brother asked, "If your children are in need and wish to sell it, will it be permissible for us?" He replied, "Yes." They took the weapons, and nothing remained except a spear. The narrator says: From the army that went against Hazr Tahseen, a man came. Malik bin Zumrah's brother said, "O son of Malik, O Musa, lend me your father's spear so I may strike with it." The narrator says: The son of Malik said, "O girl, give him the spear." One of the women from their household said, "O Musa, do you not remember your father's advice?" And that man took your father's spear after asking for it. So they went after him, took the spear from him, and broke it.

It is narrated from Hasan that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) lifted Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) onto the pulpit with him and said: "My son is a leader and a chief. Allah, the Exalted, will bring reconciliation between two groups of Muslims through him."

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah that he said: Whoever comes face to face with tribulation is uprooted from the roots.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas that he said: Hazrat Hussain came to me for consultation regarding going towards Iraq. I said to him, if they would not find fault with you and me, I would firmly hold you back, asking where are you going—to those people who martyred your father and struck your brother with spears? Regarding the generosity he showed me in this matter, he said: If this Haram (sacred sanctuary) is made lawful for fighting for any man, then I would prefer to be killed in such-and-such land, even though it is far, rather than be like the man for whom fighting in the Haram is considered lawful.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Surely, Hussain will be killed, and indeed I recognize the soil of the land where he will be martyred; he will be martyred between two rivers.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Salamah that she said: Hazrat Husain came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was sitting by the door. I observed and saw that there was something in the palm of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which he was turning over, and Hazrat Husain was lying asleep on his stomach. I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I observed and saw that you are turning something over in your palm and the child is sleeping on your stomach, and your tears are flowing." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Indeed, Jibreel came to me with the soil from the place where he will be martyred. He informed me that my Ummah will kill him."

It is narrated from Hazrat Naji Hazrami that he said he traveled with Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He began to arrange for ablution and other needs for Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) until they reached near the city of Nineveh. Their intention was to go towards Siffin. Then Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called out, "Wait, Abu Abdullah, wait, Abu Abdullah." I said, "What has happened to Abu Abdullah?" He (Hazrat Ali) said, "I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in such a state that tears were flowing from his eyes." Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) explained, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), your eyes are flowing, has someone angered you?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, 'Jibreel was standing with me. He informed me that Husayn will be martyred on the banks of the Euphrates. Thus, I could not control my eyes and they overflowed.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that his goat dropped droppings. He said to his maidservant, "O one with little hair, these droppings reminded me of a hadith which I heard from the Commander of the Faithful (Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him) when I was with him at the place of Karbala. He passed by a tree under which there were deer droppings. He took a handful of soil from that land and smelled it, then said: 'From the back of this land, seventy thousand will be gathered who will enter Paradise without reckoning.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Wa'il bin Alqamah that he was present with Hazrat Hussain in Karbala. He said that a man came and said, "Is Hussain among you?" Hazrat Hussain asked, "Who are you?" He said, "Take the glad tidings of fire." Hazrat Hussain replied, "Rather, my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful, and Obedient to be worshipped." Hazrat Hussain asked, "So who are you?" He said, "I am Ibn Huwaiyza." Hazrat Hussain said, "O Allah, gather him towards the fire." The narrator said that the man went away, and his horse ran with him, dragging him by his shins, and nothing remained of his body except his feet which were in the stirrups.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Hakim that she said: When Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, I was a girl at that time, having reached the age of womanhood or, she said, was close to reaching it. For several days after his martyrdom, the sky appeared like pieces of congealed blood.

It is narrated from Hazrat Tariq bin Shihab that he said: When the news of the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman came and I recognized youth and strength in myself, if I fought, I went out and was present with the people. When we reached the place of Rabdhah, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was present there. He led the people in prayer. When he finished the prayer with salam, he turned his face towards the people and sat leaning in his place of prayer. Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood and began to speak to him while weeping. He (Ali) said: Speak, and do not weep like a girl. Hazrat Hasan said: I had told you, when the people besieged that man, that you should go to Makkah and reside there, but you did not accept my advice. Then, when they martyred him, I told you to stay in your house until the wisdom of the Arabs returns. Even if you were in the hole of a lizard, they would strike the sides of the camel until they brought you out of that hole. You did not accept my advice, and I beseech you by Allah that you do not go to Iraq, lest you be killed in a state of heedlessness. The narrator said: Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for your statement that I should have gone to Makkah, I did not go to that man who made Makkah lawful for fighting for me. And as for your statement that the people martyred Uthman, what is my sin if the people killed him? And as for your statement that I should not go to Iraq (and should stay in Madinah), then I would be like that lizard which, while staying in its hole, hears the sound.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha’bi that he said: When there was reconciliation between Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Muawiyah, Hazrat Hasan intended to go towards Madinah. Mujahid narrated from Sha’bi, Sha’bi said: I heard him on the pulpit that he praised Allah and glorified Him, then said: Surely the wisest thing is taqwa (piety), and the most helpless thing is sin and immorality. And this matter (caliphate) in which there was disagreement between me and Muawiyah, this was my right, I have given it up for Muawiyah, or he said: this was my right, for which Muawiyah is more deserving than me, and I have done this for the protection of your lives, and I do not know, perhaps it is a trial for you and a benefit for a fixed period. Then he descended.

It is narrated from Hazrat Usama bin Sharik that he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever creates division in my Ummah while they are united, strike his neck, whoever he may be.

Hazrat Faseelah narrates from her father that he said: I heard my father say that I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, is it chauvinism (asabiyyah) that a person loves his own people?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, "No, but chauvinism is that a person supports his people in wrongdoing."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Waqid Al-Laithi that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hunain, he passed by a tree near which the polytheists used to hang their weapons, which was called Dhat Anwat (Anwat is the plural of Naut, which means something that is hung for a need; this was the tree on which the polytheists used to hang their weapons and stay around it). The noble companions said, "Make for us a Dhat Anwat." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is just like when the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said to Musa (peace be upon him), 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' Surely, you will follow the ways of those before you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will surely follow the ways of those before you, handspan by handspan, arm's length by arm's length, and even if they entered a lizard's hole, you would enter it too. The companions asked: The Jews and the Christians? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr that he said: Surely, you will follow the sweet and bitter ways of those before you.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that he said: "You are very similar to the Children of Israel in manner and conduct. You will surely follow their ways just as one feather of an arrow matches the other, and one shoe matches the other shoe." Hazrat Abdullah said: "Some statements are like magic."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Nothing happened among the Children of Israel except that its like will also happen among you." A person asked, "Will it happen among us as it happened with the people of Lot?" He replied, "Yes, may you lose your mother! What do you think about what has reached you in this regard?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "You will certainly follow the deeds of the Children of Israel; nothing happened among them except that the like of it will occur among you." One person asked, "Will there be monkeys and pigs among us as well?" He replied, "May your mother not be bereaved of you! Who has exempted you from this?" His companions said, "O Abu Abdullah, narrate to us." Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If I narrate to you, you will split into three groups: one group will fight me, another group will not help me, and a third group will deny me. Nevertheless, I will narrate before you, and I do not say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this. Tell me, if I narrate to you that you will take your book and burn it and throw it into the toilets, will you believe me?" They said, "Glory be to Allah! Will this also happen?" Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Tell me, if I narrate to you that you will break your Qibla, will you believe me?" They said, "Glory be to Allah! Will this happen?" (Then) he said, "Tell me, if I narrate to you that your mother will rise up among a group of Muslims and fight you, will you believe me?" They said, "Glory be to Allah! Will this happen?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: "O people of Iraq, you will walk on difficult paths."

It is narrated from Hazrat Awf bin Malik that he said: I sought permission to enter upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Enter." I asked, "Should I enter completely or partially?" (This was said jokingly.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Enter completely." I went to him; he was performing ablution quietly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Awf bin Malik, six things will happen before the Day of Judgment: The death of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—This is one of them." (The narrator said) With this statement, as if he had pulled out my heart. "And (second) the conquest of Bait-ul-Maqdis will be achieved. And (third) a death will come upon you; you will die from it quickly, like sheep quickly die from the disease of Qa'as. And (fourth) wealth will become abundant, so much so that a man will be given a hundred dinars, yet he will dislike it. A city of the disbelievers will be conquered, and there will be a truce between you and the Romans. They will come to you under eighty banners; under each banner will be twelve thousand men. They will be foremost in offering excuses to you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Muadh bin Jabal that he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Six things are signs of the Day of Judgment: my death, the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis, a person will be given a thousand gold coins and he will dislike it, and there will be such a tribulation that its sorrow will enter every Muslim household, and there will be a death that will afflict people like the 'qa'as' (a chest disease) afflicts goats, and the Romans will betray you; they will come numbering twelve thousand, and under every large banner will be twelve thousand men.

It is narrated from Hazrat Usaid bin Mutashams that he said: We were with Hazrat Abu Musa when the latter said, "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to narrate to us?" We said, "Why not." He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until killing (harj) becomes widespread." We asked, "What is harj?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Killing, killing." We said, "Even now we kill." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You will not be killing the disbelievers, rather a person will kill his neighbor, his brother, and his cousin." The narrator says, "This matter became difficult for us until we asked, 'Will we have intellect and awareness on that day?'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Most of the people of that time will have lost their intellects, and after them, foolish people will become their deputies, most of whom will think they are upon something (religious), but they will be upon nothing. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I fear that some matters will afflict me and you, and if those matters reach us, there will be no way out for me and you except as we entered (meaning, we will not remain safe from those tribulations except as we were safe on the day we entered Islam)."

Hazrat Abu Bakrah narrates from the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: When one of two Muslims raises a weapon against his brother, both of them are at the edge of Hell, and when one of them kills the other, both will enter Hell.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you points iron towards another, the angels curse him among you who points with iron, even if the person towards whom he pointed is his real brother.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Surely, you will follow the ways of the Children of Israel exactly like the shoe matches the shoe, and the arrow matches the arrow. But I do not know whether you will worship the calf or not.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the young men (slaves) of Syria become numerous, then whoever among you can die, let him die.
