Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Abu Amr bin Hafs bin al-Mughirah set out with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) for Yemen, and he sent his wife, the daughter of Qays, word of the one divorce that remained of her divorces. Al-Harith bin Hisham and Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah ordered some maintenance to be given to her, but she considered it too little. The two of them said: "By Allah, you are not entitled to any maintenance unless you are pregnant." So she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about her situation, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "You are not entitled to maintenance." She asked his permission to move, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission. She said: "Where, O Messenger of Allah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To the house of Ibn Umm Maktum." He was blind; she could take off her outer garments in front of him and he could not see her. When her waiting period at his house was over, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her to Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him). Later Marwan sent Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb to her to ask her about this, and she told him. He then came to Marwan and informed him, and Marwan said: "I have not heard this hadith."

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Abdullah bin Amr bin Uthman, while he was still a young man, during the governorship of Marwan, divorced the daughter of Sa'id bin Zayd, whose mother was the daughter of Qays, irrevocably. Her maternal aunt Fatimah bint Qays sent word to her and told her to move out of the house of her husband Abdullah bin Amr. When Marwan heard of this, he sent word to her ordering her to return to her home, and asked her what had led her to move before her waiting period was over. She sent back word informing him that her maternal aunt Fatimah bint Qays had given her the ruling that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had given her (Fatimah herself) the ruling to go out or move when Abu Amr bin Hafs al-Makhzumi divorced her. So Marwan sent Qabisah bin Dhu'ayb to Fatimah bint Qays to ask her about this, and she told him that she had been married to Abu Amr bin Hafs al-Makhzumi. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor over part of Yemen, and her husband set out with him. He sent her the one divorce that remained for her, and ordered Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah and al-Harith bin Hisham to spend on her, but they said: "By Allah, she is not entitled to any maintenance unless she is pregnant." She asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to move, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission. She said: "Where shall I move, O Messenger of Allah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To the house of Ibn Umm Maktum." He was blind; she could take off her outer garments in front of him and he could not see her. She stayed there until her waiting period was over, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married her to Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him). Qabisah went back to Marwan and told him this, and Marwan said: "I have heard this hadith only from a woman, so we will hold to the safe (and firm) practice on which we found the people." When this reached Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: "Between me and you is the Book of Allah. Allah says: 'Divorce them at the start of their waiting period' [Al-Talaq: 1] up to His words: 'You do not know; perhaps Allah will bring about some new matter after that' [Al-Talaq: 1]." She said: "What new matter can come about after the third divorce? It is only a man taking his wife back. So how can you say that she has no maintenance if she is not pregnant? How can a woman be confined without maintenance?"
