Masruq and Amr bin Utbah (may Allah have mercy on them both) wrote to Sayyidah Subay'ah bint al-Harith al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), asking her about her case. She wrote back to them that she had given birth twenty-five (days) after the death of her husband, and then prepared herself to seek good (that is, marriage). Abu al-Sanabil bin Ba'kak passed by her and said: You have hurried; observe the waiting period ('iddah) of the later of the two terms, that is, four months and ten days. (Subay'ah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:) So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me. He said: "What is that about?" I told him the whole story, and he said: "If you find a righteous husband, then marry."

Sayyidah Subay'ah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) said: My husband, Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him), died (while) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj. I remained for two months after him, then I gave birth to the child in my womb. Then Abu al-Sanabil bin Ba'kak of Banu Abd al-Dar passed by and came in to my two in-laws. He wanted to marry me himself, and I had made myself ready for marriage and sought chastity (through marriage). He said: What is the matter with you, O Subay'ah? I said: I want to marry. He said: No, by Allah, the waiting period is nothing but four months and ten days. So I put on my clothes and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the house of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). I asked him, and he said: "Your waiting period is complete; marry."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Subay'ah al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever among you is able to die in Madinah, let him die there, for no one dies there except that I will be an intercessor or a witness for him on the Day of Resurrection."

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah bin Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father (Abdullah bin Utbah) that he wrote to Ibn al-Arqam: Ask Subay'ah al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her when her husband died. She said: He gave me the ruling that once I had given birth, I could marry.

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that his father wrote to Abdullah bin al-Arqam al-Zuhri (may Allah be pleased with him), instructing him to go to Subay'ah bint al-Harith al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask her about her story, and about what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to her when she delivered her pregnancy. So Umar bin Abdullah wrote to Abdullah bin Utbah, informing him that Subay'ah (may Allah be pleased with her) had told him that she was married to Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was from Banu Amir and was among those who took part in Badr. He died during the Farewell Hajj while she was pregnant, and she gave birth after his death. When she had recovered from her postnatal bleeding (nifas), she adorned herself for those who might propose. Then a man of Banu Abd al-Dar, Abu al-Sanabil bin Ba'kak, came in to her and said to her: Why do I see you adorned? Perhaps you want to marry. By Allah, you cannot marry until four months and ten days have passed over you. Sayyidah Subay'ah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When he said that to me, I gathered my clothes about me until evening came, then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about that, "and he gave me the ruling that I had come out of my waiting period on the day I gave birth, and he told me to marry if I wished."

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Marwan sent Abdullah bin Utbah to Subay'ah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her what ruling the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had given her. She told him that she was married to Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him); he died during the Farewell Hajj, and he was one who had fought at Badr. Then she gave birth before four months and ten days had passed since his death. When she had recovered from her postnatal bleeding (nifas) and had applied kohl, Abu al-Sanabil bin Ba'kak met her and said: Perhaps you want to marry. (The waiting period is) four months and ten days from the death of your husband. (Subay'ah (may Allah be pleased with her)) said: So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what Abu al-Sanabil had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You came out of your waiting period as soon as you gave birth."
