Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "When you received it with your tongues from one another and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge" [Surah An-Nur: 15]; he said: Allah knew the opposite of it. "And you thought it insignificant, while in the sight of Allah it was tremendous" [Surah An-Nur: 15]; he said: meaning if you accuse the leader of the Mothers of the Believers and the wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and attribute to her what was not in her and what had never even crossed her heart, whereas I (Allah) created her pure and protected her from every evil.

Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "When you received it with your tongues" [Surah An-Nur: 15]: this was when they indulged in talk about the affair of Sayyidah Aishah; one of them would say: I heard so-and-so saying such-and-such. He said: "You received it with your tongues", meaning they narrated it from one another: I heard it from so-and-so, I heard it from so-and-so. "And said with your mouths" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning with your tongues — that is, about the accusation against Sayyidah Aishah — "that of which you had no knowledge" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning without knowing that the accusation you made was true. "And you thought it insignificant" [Surah An-Nur: 15]; he said: and you thought that making a false accusation is a light sin. "While in the sight of Allah it was tremendous" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning in the burden of sin.

Nafi' bin Umar al-Jumahi relates: I heard Ibn Abi Mulaykah say: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recite this verse: "When you received it with your tongues" [Surah An-Nur: 15], and she would say: It is merely the rapid flow of lies. And Ibn Abi Mulaykah says: She knows it best, for this verse was revealed about her.
