Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "When you received it with your tongues" [Surah An-Nur: 15]: this was when they indulged in talk about the affair of Sayyidah Aishah; one of them would say: I heard so-and-so saying such-and-such. He said: "You received it with your tongues", meaning they narrated it from one another: I heard it from so-and-so, I heard it from so-and-so. "And said with your mouths" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning with your tongues — that is, about the accusation against Sayyidah Aishah — "that of which you had no knowledge" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning without knowing that the accusation you made was true. "And you thought it insignificant" [Surah An-Nur: 15]; he said: and you thought that making a false accusation is a light sin. "While in the sight of Allah it was tremendous" [Surah An-Nur: 15], meaning in the burden of sin.
